Oh, I'm so happy tonight. I've mentioned in another thread that Tinga, a 6yr old Sun Conure I adopted last November, doesn't like to leave his cage or play stand. I was on the lounge tonight & Tinga was on his play stand, eating his evening meal. I turned my back to him while I leaned over to pick something up. I hear flap, flap, flap & plop, Tinga landed on my shoulder. Probably doesn't sound like a such a big deal, but it's very exciting to me. I wasn't sure what to do, so I just spoke to him softly for a bit and after about 5 mins I leant towards his play stand to see if he wanted to go back, which he did. I wish I'd thought to give him some treats. Who knows how long it will be till his next visit, but I'm so happy he did this tonight.

I think that is quite special. A step in the right direction. It can only get better from here on in!

Thanks for the encouraging comments He hasn't flown to me again, but twice since then he has walked from my hand (during step up clicker training) onto my shoulder and tonight I walked to his play gym & offered him my shoulder & he hopped right on. Whenever this happens, I don't want to push it, so before 5 mins are up I let him go back to his play stand again.

Maybe try something other than clicker training - maybe the clicker is a put off? Just a suggestion.

Hi Ellen Maybe, you're right, but before I started with the clicker he would not step up at all. I sort of feel it's the clicker that's giving him the confidence to firstly step up, and secondly, to take the next step of walking up my shoulder. To Tinga, the clicker = a sesame seed which he loves & gets at no other time. Last night I think it went even better. When I lent to towards the play stand to give him the chance to hop off, he went further behind my neck instead. Eventually after a minute he did hop off, but on the very next step up, he again went up my shoulder. I don't think I'm ready to take him to the couch with me yet, because of the Lorikeet factor. My theory of offering him the chance to hop off my hand or shoulder at a early stage, is that I hope to leave him wanting more, rather than have him on my shoulder for longer than he wants to be there. I have no idea if my theory is right. For all I know, he might think I'm rejecting him when I put him down so quick, but I feel like we are taking baby steps in the right direction. hope so, any way

It was only a suggestion , but by the sounds of things you have it all worked out. Time is always the key with these things. I look forward to your progress reports.

I know I hope my reply didn't sound rude. I was just chatting & waffling away All this week he has wanted to come all the way up my arm to my shoulder, so I think we're making progress. Either that, or he just thinks he's closer to the sesame seeds from there.

Congratulations Robyn, That must be such a rewarding experience for you , seems we have a long long way to go still with Rocky. Looking at your cage in the background it certainly looks very interesting, I would love to see a full on shot of it if possible. May help to give us ideas for our cage. Cheers, John

Cheers, John Hi John It's taken since last November but it seems he is coming around. I've heard other owners tell of where their bird took longer still. So baby steps with Rocky and you will get there. You asked for some cage shots, so here we go:- The Lorikeet's CageFull Shot, including their play stand The Left Side The Right Side Tinga Sun Conure's CageFull Shot, with Tinga on his play stand It's hard to take a full shot, as I can't get far enough back in the space, so this is as best I can manage The Left Side The Right Side The Middle The Cage Tinga lived in for 5 years before I adopted him

Oh WOWOW - birdy heaven - maybe Tinga was just so overwhelmed when he first came to you - so much to play with so little time in a day - those setups are just AMAZING! And I thought I was spoiling Wally

Robyn,
WOW that is quite amazing, I daren't ever show my wife any of those shots it would give her too many ideas. ;D
By the looks of it that setup takes up quite a bit of real estate, but obviously you get great enjoyment out of it and your birds do to.
Thanks for posting those photos, gives food for thought.
Cheers, John

Thanks for the nice comments. Yes, it does take up a fair bit of space John. What happened is that hubby is not a pet person, so there's no dog or cat in my life and the kids are all grown up & have left home, so my birds fill the gap. I only have them to spoil. Since hubby won't allow pets in the house, my half of the garage was converted into a bird room. A wall went up, so hubby could still park in his half. My half has internal access into the house. I have a lounge, TV, desk, PC and the two big bird cages. This is my relaxation / chill out room. I started out being cross I couldn't have my birds in the house proper, but now I think it's so much better this way. There is no way my birds would be able to have such big cages or have hanging nets etc, in the lounge or family room. I'd have to always consider the needs & wants of my hubby's taste in those rooms. In my bird room, I can be selfish & have the room any way I want it

Hi Robyn, Seems like you and hubby have everything sorted just right going by the description of your setup. Probably also helps in keeping the birdie mess out of the house. Our German shepherd dog Luto has his nose put out at the moment because although he is an outside dog he is very aware of something that screeches a lot on the inside. On occasion as a treat for him he is allowed to come in and say hello, but not for long as he never settles and is a very boisterous boy. Anyway I thought it only right to let Luto in to meet the pink chicken to find out where all that screeching noise was coming from, but as you can image I tried my best to get Luto to calmly look at Rocky in his cage, but no he was having none of that and instantly tried to stand on his hind legs and lean against the cage to get a closer look. Rocky I'm glad to say did not seem too traumatized by all of this, but Luto will be staying outside until further notice despite how pleading his eyes can be when he wants to. Cheers, John Attachments:

Aw wow thats definitly an upgrate from the cage Tinga was in to what he is in now! Thats an amazing setup for both Tinga and the Lories, they would have so MUCH STUFF to play with. My little boy would flip out probably haha. He has quite alot of toys I rotate around but nothing near what Tinga's got. I'm so glad he's taking those steps with you. It must feel so good your finally starting to get there with him. Keep updating on how its going

OMG Tinga went down my PJ top! Have to say I was a little nervous of that beak under there, as a lady doesn't always wear anything under her PJs, but no way I was going to pull him out. He stayed there quite a while & then he snuggled under a blanket with me & by his breathing, I knew he fell asleep. Sweet yellow ball of feathers.
