Hi Guys I just received my plaque I ordered from Daniella at Wild Art Tiles! It is gorgeous, so thought I would share it with you and recommend her site while I am here! The picture doesn't do it justice!!!! I had previously bought one for my gorgeous little dog Ebony when she passed away, so thought it would be nice to get one for Toddles as well......Something so special to remember my girls with..... The link for Daniella's site is www.wildarttiles.com/page24.htmTake a look through the site. She does everything from Kitchen splash back tiles to Memorial Tiles....some incredible work!! I highly recommend Daniella - she helped me through the entire process and it's all very personalised.......... Thanks Flossy Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Toddles plaque looks lovely Flossy and a lovely tribute too. With my rats dying so often due to their short life span, with my 25 dead rats planted in one of our courtyards our place would look like a tiling show room not to mention the $1250 outlay to get them all done

Awwww.....that's sad Anzac!! Why do they have such a short life? You could always tile a room or something with them....lol! Ok, so not cost efficient in huge numbers, but gorgeous all the same..... I think it's perfect......... Give your lil ratties a scratch from me....hehehehe

It's something you have to take on with rats that they only live for a couple of years. There is a terrible respiratory disease called Myoplasma that ends many rats lives and it's passed from mother to babies and gets resistant to most of the drugs we throw at it. Both boy and girl rats have their specific diseases that they die from at around 2 to 2 1/2 years. Th oldest rat I have had in 25 years of keeping rats was one week off 3 years. It's still heartbreaking each and every time, especially if they are suffering and the vet has to put them to sleep as they are tough little buggers. I can still list all my 25 dead rats and still miss them all terribly but it's just a (horrible) fact of keeping rats. Tributes are always a way of reminding you how special any animal was in your life and those plaques look wonderful for that.

Wow, I never knew that! How sad - but I guess Mother nature works in mysterious ways....albeit sometimes so cruel! I don't know how you handle losing them so soon.....but I guess by now you are somewhat "used to it" - if you could ever get used to something dying .....
I had 2 pet rats when I was younger but I didn't get to keep them very long, even though I loved them.....things changed and I had to rehome them. That in itself broke my heart....as they were so amazing as pets.....
I would love another....but Hubby has said I can either get ready for a greyhound or something else such as a rat or ferret.....not allowed both......!! BUT!! WHO??? says he is the boss anyway...heeheheheheh.......
Goodluck with your rats....and thanks for the information you have provided to me.....I have learnt something new today!

Do what I do and ply the other half with bourbon, works a treat for getting your way/another animal ;D You do sort-of get used to the rats dying but each of them had their own special personality which I miss and remember them all. I have a very ill rat atm, Jellybean, and every day I wake up and expect her to be gone. Hopefully she'll choose to go on her own, in the cage, surrounded by her mates so I don't have to make the horrible trip to the vet. I have a wonderful vet who charges me nothing to put my animals to sleep (even our last greyhound). Can you believe some vets charge you $70 to put your rat to sleep

Aww....poor Jellybean! Hope she goes peacefully when it's her time..... My hubby has put his foot down hard this time....lol! SO he thinks....hehehehe.... And YES! I do believe you about the Vet prices....it's unreal. I know they have their living to earn, and overheads, staff etc and time is money - but this is another reason people don't get their animals help.....some just cannot afford it - simple as that! I know with Toddles - we spent a small fortune on her and would do it again in a heart beat - no questions asked........but in saying that, it all went on our credit card anyway..... It's basically the same as Dentists isn't it....lol! Costs you a fortune so people stay away!......Anyway, I will probably spark off another debate by the above, so sorry if I have offended anyone.....not my intention...... Still very sad about your little ratties......but I guess it's one of those strange things that happen.......I was watching a program by Sir David the other night and there was these adorable little Chameleons....their life span is 40 days or something like that? Imagine that! Incredible!!

Dont think you will offend any one Flossy I agree with you, some people love their pets so much, feed and look after them extremely well, but simply cannot afford hundreds of dollars for vet bills and yes we do it ourselves with dentists, thank goodness for our public health system, faults and all or many people would never seek medical treatment for themselves. Vets take years to qualify, and deserve to be paid well, but sometimes the fees seem crazy

As I said I love my vet to death and he is in for the love of the animals but I also use another more specialized rat vet for spaying all my girl rats. The drug we use the most is called Baytril (i know it's used for birds as well) and the other vet I use charges me $98 for a 100ml bottle. My usual vet refuses to sell me a bottle and he charges me $30 for 10ml, that's $300 a bottle That's the mark up that the vet's slog you for. My point was that I think its a bit unfair to charge a grieving client $70 a visit to have their rat put to sleep for about 0.5ml of Lethabarb for a $10 rat. I know, and have heard of, horrible ways of putting their rats to sleep or just let them die a slow death But I do agree with you Gypsy about a vet's training, much kudos to them. Generally you need the same score to get into vet than you do medicine yet these clever people choose vet over med and the very high salary people doctors earn compared to vets. I had a crack at trying to get into vet school but my grades weren't good enough so I ended up doing a Zoology degree instead. ps Flossy sorry if we high jacked your thread

Such a nice tribute. I must have a good AV. Consults are only around $45. $70 seems a lot. Even when Butch had his collar put on (under anesthesia) & also an over night stay to make sure he accepted the collar it cost me around $120 all up. The collar staid on for between 4-6 months (can't remember which) & Butch went in for fortnightly visits to check for skin irritations around the collar & AV also did his pins he couldn't reach. I wasn't charged for those fortnightly visits, he told me they were included in what I had already paid, which remember was only around $120. Another time on a routine visit he discovered that Butch's micro chip was either faulty or had fallen out. He redid the chipping, under anesthesia) at no charge. He must be one of the good ones
