Hi Guys, Ive finally found a friend for Mango, my male Jenday. Chilly just joined our flock a few hours ago! (Jenday hen) They spotted each other when I moved her cage into the house past Mango's cage and since then have been calling to each other. Waiting on a vetcheck on Monday with the avian vet at the Kellyville Animal hospital before I let them come into contact though (Which I think is the right way to go about it?) Chilly looks healthy, climbing around the cage, eating some apple and coming for a scratch. Havent handled her since i moved her into her cage though, will give her some time to settle and bribe her with some sunflower seeds later tomorrow. So happy and excited Pics to follow

Is there anything specific I need to look at as far as issues/disease are concerned?
So far she is eating seeds/grapes/apple and drinking. Takes sunflowers from my hand and also comes for a scratch. Climbing all over the cage chewing on various things, so she looks to be ok and alert/attentive. Had her out a bit (opened the top of the cage) and she played a bit on top as well then went back inside for a snack.
Vet appointment is on Monday afternoon.
One thing that does worry me a bit is she only has a temporary band on. DNA sexed as female, I just hope those bands didnt get mixed up!

. Vet appointment is on Monday afternoon. One thing that does worry me a bit is she only has a temporary band on. DNA sexed as female, I just hope those bands didnt get mixed up! If the ring is a split aluminium ring then it would be best to get the vet to remove it during the examination - it could potentially be squashed by Chilly, cutting off circulation to the foot. If it is stainless steel, or a solid aluminium ring then it won't be a problem. And most breeders will put the bands on and then sample the bird for sexing so it is unlikely they could have been mixed up. cheers, Mike

Very sweet. And I do love their names I'm not a big fan of leg bands, I've seen some nasty things over the years.

Ive taken it off so she has no band at the moment. Mango has a solid/closed band on. Im mainly worried that I picked up the female and not the male

Just get the vet to take a sample for DNA sexing - cost is around $20 and then your doubts will go - one way or another!
cheers,
Mike

Vet visit done, all clear so far, waiting on a few test results and dna sexing as confirmation. Vet did say that she was pretty young, just over 12 weeks by her reckoning. Weight was 100grams which the vet said was ok. Ive introduced the 2 to each other, been getting dirty looks from my wife about the extra cage in the house and the 2 birds calling each other. No issues so far, they seem to be friendly towards each other. Mango was super excited to meet his new friend. Mango & Chillie enjoying some time outside their cage. How's Chilly and Mango getting along mate? How's your better half coping with the two of them? Excellent set up you have there. My two were aviary birds before I got them and they are about 16 months old, so I've got the task in front of me regarding training, but Hototo, Chiku & myself are making slow but steady progress. They've never been flighty birds as long as everything stayed outside the bars. As soon as I so much as put my finger inside the door all hell would break loose. Now they will bolt up and take the snow pea sprouts from my hand...all the way down to about 5mm away from my fingers. So close, but so far. Can't wait until I can get them to step up and give them a scratch. Then I'll be able to let them loose around the house. At least there's no mistaking the sexes. I wanted to take some pics on the weekend, but it was way too hot and stormy. I'll have a go this weekend and post some pics.

The 2 of them are going well, thanks for asking Test results have come back from the vet and its an all clear. Now just waiting on sexing info. They are now living together in Mango's large cage and seem to be happy. I put a bigger birdie hut into the cage, but only Mango sleeps in it so far - Chillie still sleeps on a perch just outside the hut. Mango also took a month or 2 before he started sleeping in the birdy hut himself so I assume its just a matter of time. My wife is around during the day to keep an eye (and ear) on them, but so far so good. Chillie is now first in line to step up when you open the cage door. She is still a little unsure about stepping up when outside the cage, but generally she does. To be honest I havent spent alot of time training her to do this so its to be expected - For now Im happy to be able to pick her up and put her down as required. She is also coloring up a bit, getting alot more yellow on the head. She is eating well and seems alot more confident climbing around the cage/branches/swings/boings etc (she was very clumsy at first - another sign up a young bird I suppose). Mango has become less "clingy" to me, and is now content to spend time with Chillie, either in the cage, ontop of the cage or on the stand on my desk. While I do miss his clingyness sometimes, I feel its for the best and that he will hopefully be a happier bird. So all is going well, could not have expected better to be honest.

Birdy Hut? Mate if I put so much as a swing my mobile aviary, mine won't even venture to that side! Once I've got them trained and flying around the house, they'll be fine though.

Yea its just a matter of time, Chillie is settling in quick because she copies what Mango does, which now includes making a helluva noise when they even think I may be getting near home from work
