Hi I am new to this site and was wandering if anyone could suggest what would be the best cock bird to put with my half sider princess parrot hen. See photo.. I hand raised her last year and she is now 12 months old and has been DNAed, At the moment she has paired up with a blue cock (not sure if blue split ) but as I don't really understand the genetics of princess parrots am not sure what colour would be best to pair her with . I have been told that some half siders are infertile but she has been laying eggs and I will give her a nest box and see what happens...thanks

Hi and welcome to the Forum. Unfortunately your photo didn't come through - I would love to see it, since I've never even heard of a Princess half-sider, and I've only seen it in budgies as well as once in a ringneck. For those who are not aware of them they are birds which are basically split down the middle - half will be one colour and the other half a different colour -see the photo at www.bbaviaries.com.au/images/index.php?q=b&b=24 for a ringneck example. The correct scientific term for these birds is a bilateral gynandromorph and they are in fact half male and half female. Essentially a hermaphrodite. An Eclectus half-sider was half green on the male side and half red on the female side. There is a very interesting article at scienceblogs.com/grrlscientist/2010/03/12/sex-bird-gynandromorph-somatic/ about a detailed study of the genetics of these birds. I assume your bird is half normal green and half blue? It really doesn't matter what you try to pair "her" with at this stage. The large majority of these birds are infertile - their sex organs tend to be a bit of a mess, and even a hen that produces eggs is by no means likely to produce fertile eggs since her sex chromosomes are going to be messed up and successful fertilization is therefore unlikely to occur. However that doesn't mean it isn't worth a try - so I would put her with any male that she seems to like and who likes her! Maybe she is in that 1 or 2 % that can produce fertile eggs. And colour isn't a factor since the half-sider is not a mutation that is inherited and so is not going to be passed on in the event of fertile eggs. I look forward to seeing the photo, and hearing if you have any success with breeding, cheers, Mike

WHen you are writing a message (use the full reply and not the quick reply option!) you will see to the left of the message window the Imageshack tool - click on the browse button, then go to your image on your computer and select it - then click on "open". Then returning to the Forum click on the "host it!" button. It will be transferred to Imageshack and you can then click on the "forum code" link in ImageShack and copy with Ctrl-C, then paste this link with Ctrl-V into your message.
Sounds complicated but it isn't really and after the first time you will be able to do it quickly and easily.
cheers,
Mike
