HI ALL I have a new flock member a black headed caique 4 months old he is cute and sort of reminds me of a lorakeet in his noise and manner ;-p anyway he has a permanent disability his right foot is curled and useless for walking but seems to be better while climbing his left foot is slightly effected but no where near as bad I have modified his cage bringing things down lower giving him different types , materials of perches boings etc and and put several layers of paper on the bottom to cushion his falls lol and he does slip here and there but gets up and off he goes again he is getting better He makes 4 birds all in the lounge so there is alot of interaction Has anyone else got a bird with a handicap or has more suggestions for anything else I can do (not that I am sure this young one realises he has a problem lol)

Caiques are absolutely adorable. My Green Cheek Conure had siezed up feet when I got him. He's spent two years in a canary bell cage and couldnt really move much, so his feet had locked to the perch. I had a good vet who taught me a few things that helped get Renly back his feet. The first one was taking him in the shower with me, or letting him run around in warm water. Once his feet are warmed up, I'd lay him on his back and massage his feet. Just gentle rotating motions betwen your fingers. It took about 9 months, but he went from Quasimodo style hobbling to climbing and eating his food with his feet. If you make sudden moves while hes on you he can slide right off sometimes, but its a world better than it was. The vet said something about the increased bloodflow through his feet making the tissue in his feet repare a little easier each time it regenerated. Attachments:

So that’s why they keep scratching their leg very often.
