Hi there,
I have inadvertently managed to grow some millet in an old plant pot after its last occupant had died... Does anyone know when it should be harvested? Do I leave it until it dies and dries up or do I need to pick it and hang it up?
Thanks,
Claire

I regularly grow bird seed as a garden crop to provide food for my birds. I always feed it when it is green rather than after it has dried. Green seed is much healthier than dry seed - the drying out means a lot of good nutrients are lost, only to reappear when the dry seed is sprouted. I will take a photo of my current crop in the morning, when it is daylight, to post here.
cheers,
Mike

Thanks, Mike. It never occurred to me it could be fed green, doh. I think it must be almost ripe, it is the foxtail type.

The promised photos - I sowed a hand full of finch seed in an area of a vegie/herb area and mostly red panicum has grown. One photo shows the patch, while the second shows a seed head with the seed just starting to turn from green to red - ideal to feed to all my birds as a treat. I am also growing a crop of Bok Choy for the birds - grown from seed sown about 5 weeks ago. I have about 30 seedlings planted out in total and expect to be able to start harvesting in late April. A photo of some of them is also included. I also have celery planted - for the birds since I don't like celery myself - and will be planting silver beet shortly. cheers, Mike

Thanks for sharing. What a lovely garden your birds have!
I just planted bok Choy for our bird too, my little vegie patch is starting to become the bird garden... The only plants in it that aren't for the bird are some guerrilla tomatoes. Though my major crop is caterpillars at the moment...
