My budgies and cockatiels are sitting on eggs with one budgie hen hatching 2 tiny babies.
Now if only I could get my other parrots to breed that would be great!

Three little budgies and one tiel now. Last year the Elegants and the Lorikeets bred as well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

And my fingers are crossed for you too. I miss not having all my birds now. The gift of new life is just such a beautiful thing

What birds do you have now Ellen? How's the baby population coming along Laraine? Hopefully you have more good news Sadly we now only have 5 birds left, soon to be only two We are going out of birds for a little while, as we have decided to do a little more travelling (and travelling further distances than before) and it is just a little hard to find birdy-sitters these days. I could never ever part with Chuckles and Pickles. They are just the air that I breathe. Our whole life revolves around them They will continue to travel with us.

Nothing more has hatched but there are more eggs. It is a problem getting someone to bird sit if you want to travel, Chuckles and Pickles are very lucky birdies.

Bird breeding can be very challenging at times. This morning when I checked my birds before work I heard scuffling in the breeding box which holds the 3 baby budgies. Another hen has decided she wants that box and is trying to kick the mother out and take over. I got her out but she went straight back in and continued the fight. She is one of my best breeders and has been in a box further down.
I have relocated her in with the cockatiels for the moment as I was worried about the safety of the babies. I noticed blood on the back of the box but everyone seems to be OK. Grr.

Budgie girls can be a real menace during breeding season - they often think the other bird;s box is better than theirs and want to take over. I always tried whenever I could to breed budgies one pair to a breeding cabinet. After the breeding season they could return to a flight to rest.
cheers,
Mike

That's sad Laraine. They are living in such a loving environment. But I have to say, it is typical female hormones. We all get a little that way at times I had an albino hen and she was the nastiest budgie I have ever owned. I too, had to separate her from the rest. She just wasn't happy unless she was telling everyone what to do. And do it her way. Hope everything works out for you.

The baby budgies are coming along nicely, lovely colours one mauve, one yellow and one green. The other female is still in the the Cockatiels, yesterday I noticed her and her male feeding through the wire. I don't know whether I should put her back in when the babies fledge or not. I would like her to breed.

They will happily breed in such a cage, and then after the breeding season when moulting starts they can return to the aviary. When we had our shop I had a bank of 8 breeding cabinets each about 50 x 40 x 40 cm in the shop and we had a lot of success with budgie breeding in them. cheers, Mike

They are very cute, the mauve one fledged yesterday and the other two won't be far behind. I'm still wondering whether I can put the other female back in or if the other one will have a second clutch. I have a Lutino Redrump also sitting on eggs, she breeds every season except last year.

My turks have hatched some babies, heard them cheeping away, not sure how many yet. These pair certainly know their stuff and are great parents, plus I already have a waiting list from last season. Looks like turks are hard to get here in Perth

Good on you Anzac, I can't breed Turks and I have 2 pairs. What sort of aviary do you have them in, any advice you can give.

Hi Laraine, I think I am really lucky in that I sourced my turks from good breeders (both from separate breeders), especially my female Tilly who is a great mum and a calm bird, unlike her mate, Billy who is a bit mad but they are extremely bonded. In fact I have to stop these two from over breeding and take their nest box out They are in a roughly 2x 1.5m aviary but are housed alone. Don't feed them anything special but small parrot/pellet mix and usual fresh greens etc. Usual clutch 3 but they have raised 4 before. As I said as soon as I advertise them my phone rings hot.

As I have posted in the ark thread, we lost Tilly yesterday. I am not sure what to do with her babies that are hatched. I am guessing they are around a week old, I'm hoping Billy will continue to feed them as both Turk parents feed the babies. Not sure how he is coping as they were extremely bonded he calls for all the time. I never had much luck hand raising my bourkes when I breed them but hopefully Billy can keep them alive. They will be precious as Tilly''s last babies. She was such an extraordinary mum
