Call me a bad Daddy. I'm new to the whole breeding thing and I wasn't really expecting my Canaries to nest. Seems the call of nature over-rode their better judgement and my little girl picked a nice corner of the aviary on the ground to weave a beautiful little nest.
She sat on the nest for maybe three weeks (longer than I expected) and laid two eggs. She's got plenty of energy and appears healthy. One egg hatched last week into a little bub, the other has yet to hatch. Within a couple of days we noticed bub appeared to be sleeping but moved after a while. A couple of days later again, he hasn't moved. I'm really worried he's died and the other egg wont hatch. Also, I've put up new nesting boxes and I want to make sure that the Canaries don't nest on the ground again.
Also, I have a family of three King Quails (Boy, Girl Girl), four two-week old bubs and one of the girls sitting on another four eggs. I noticed the family hanging around the canary nest a little the other day, could the Quails have picked on the baby?

I haven't had this happen- you put nest boxes? From my experience with Canaries they prefer to build nests in something like a small siv, or the cup-like nest things (I don't know what they're called) instead of the boxes

Mike, I am having the same problem with my female Plumhead, who has laid her eggs on the floor underneath a breeding cabinet and is sitting tight on them. I don't want to disturb her. There is a spare breeding box in the aviary she could have used, hopefully if they hatch the chicks will be OK. It is a mixed aviary.

So the bub died and one egg didn't hatch. The Canaries covered up the nest and moved on. They've now built an improved nest in the opposite corner of the aviary, before I got those style nests in. They don't seem to like the boxes at all.

So in the absence of a suitable dish they are making do the best they can on the floor. cheers, Mike

Who knows why hens sometimes do these strange things - hopefully next time she will use the box. cheers, Mike

It is difficult to get access to her nest, but she moved off long enough to see that there are still 2 eggs. I'm not game to disturb her but it is coming up to three weeks, so hopefully will know something soon. Also how long do females go in and out of the nest box before hopefully laying an egg. I have 2 females who are doing this but no eggs.

Unfortunately the Canary nest didn't work out, so she tried again in a drier corner. didn't work again and she's destroyed the nest.
I've just installed a proper nest for her, fingers crossed that helps. I'm also improving nutrition at the moment.
