Hello, I have a baby albino IRN and I would like to use sisal rope for one of her toys however I feel the rough fibers could be a potential choking hazard? I've read that birds can occasionally choke on the fibres of celery so would this be any different? I know sisal rope is common for bird toys and I can't find anything saying that it could be dangerous, but I just thought I'd check here to make sure!

There is a picture at my local Avian Vet showing how rope from a toy got down the neck of a cockatiel. Not sure what type of rope but I would be careful.

All the cases of fibres being swallowed by birds appear to have been cotton - as used in rope perches and boings. Apparently the cotton doesn't break down in the birds crop or gizzard. Supposedly sisal is OK - I'm not sure why it should be safer than cotton - I wouldn't have thought sisal would break down any easier than cotton. However the general opinion I've seen have said that sisal is OK and cotton is not. SO if you have cotton rope perches or boings check them regularly to make sure they are not being chewed by your bird.
cheers,
Mike
