Ok so I now have a Blue Fronted Amazon. Not sure of sex but is approx. 10 weeks old. Came to me via a couple that wanted to breed themselves an Amazon, they loaned a breeding pair off a friend and set about giving it a good honest go....
Anyway, birds laid eggs and then one day they would not let this couple into the aviary (so we are assuming this is the hatch date) about 8 weeks later a bub emerges so they set about trying to catch it fast forward a few weeks the get it, bring it inside and manage to feed it sunflower seeds from their hand for a few day, it is freaked out and afraid so they no longer want the bird. Some back and forth and they decide to hand the bird into the shelter for a cost... normally the shelter does not purchase birds however seeing this poor little one and knowing that I have wanted one for the past 5 years I agreed to take this one on and he/she will be my personal bird.
So now I have an Amazon..... at the moment she is a bit freaked out and also light on, last night she ate about 3 tablespoons of HR mix with apple puree mixed it. She wanted more but figured that was enough and not going to shock her system. Today she has eaten the same about for beaky and Lunch and if she is interested later on will offer again for dinner. According to the research I have done, Amazons are not 100% weaned till 16 weeks. Add to this the only other thing she eats is sunflower seeds but only if you hand feed them to her not if they are in a dish.
We are going to the vet tomorrow to get sexed and also have our micro chip put in and the god awful wing chip fixed up! But until then anyone that has an Amazon have and suggestions for me? Will need a bigger cage so cage options or pictures of set ups would be great. Also any ideas on foods to tempt her with, she will eat from my hand but if I tried to touch her I will loose skin so just working on trust and making sure she is getting enough to eat and drink!
Any help, links etc... would be great, I had done the basic research and knew I wanted one but had not taken the next step because I thought it was going to be a few years before I got one so now playing catch up.
