Hi there I have a Galah, if unknown sex. I was wondering if there is a way of sexing, either at the vets or at home ? The behavior bis a bit throwing, very talkative, loves to be handled/scratched. I've just been assuming female but would like to know for sure. Is not a mature bird .

Hi there I have a Galah, if unknown sex. I was wondering if there is a way of sexing, either at the vets or at home ? The behavior bis a bit throwing, very talkative, loves to be handled/scratched. I've just been assuming female but would like to know for sure. Is not a mature bird . Once they have reached 12 months there is a clear difference in eye colour - males remain dark while females get a reddish colour - I will include a photo of a wild pair to illustrate this - the closer one is the female. Alternatively if the bird is still too young it can be sexed either by DNA, where a small blood sample is taken and the DNA examined to determine sex. Or it can be surgically sexed by an avian vet - a quick anaesthetic and a thin endoscope is inserted into the abdomen to see which sex organs are present. Surgical sexing sounds a bit drastic but is very safe with an experienced avian vet.
