Hi Everyone! My name is Ben, I'm a professional photographer and I have been lurking around here for about a month now. My partner and I have adopted a baby Rainbow Lorikeet called PomPom and I figured it was time I up and introduced you all! He/she was about 8 weeks old when we got him/her, cute as a button and infatuated with apples! At 13-14 weeks he/she is happily tame, has been trained to settle on command (mostly! He/she *is* a lorikeet!), will step up, and this week has graduated to breakfasting with me on her T-stand!Pom-Pom this morning! 14 weeks (ish!) He/she has figured out how not to fly into windows and can properly steer and everything! Landing, not so good yet lol, but is managing to stop on the cage, the T-stand and my arm ok! He/she is off to get sexed on friday, and that will save us many forward slashes and make us happy lol! If you wanna check out some more pics and get the full story you can read my blog here, but I'll keep updating you anyway. Anyways thanks for all the indirect help you've given us this month! Im glad to be a part of this forum and even gladder of my baby lorikeet Pom-Pom. See you around! Ben Read more: aussiebirds.proboards.com/thread/12017/pom-rainbow-lorikeet-baby#ixzz3BvnzLpKc

So I'll talk to myself for a bit and let you all know that our Pom Pom is a real trooper. Tonight he/she stayed in the cage with the door open while I prepared his/her food, and came to his/her T-stand to eat only when called. It only took four days for Pom Pom to sort out the wait command properly. He/she has also had a bit of success with "come here" and landing on my arm. Couldn't be more prouderer! Tomorrow night of to the avian vet for sexing, and what should be his/her last visit for 12 months! Can also report a weight gain from 110 four weeks ago to 130 with an empty crop this morning! And completely weaned off the hand rearing mix too. Eating the Vetafarm dry golden lori and the nectar pellets at night, fresh fruit and veg in the morning, and pears or grapes for training. He/she even let me clean his/her beak after dinner tonight!
Tops bird, only wish I'd come across parrots earlier! Anyone know how to train a parrot to fly "off" you? Getting him to come has been fairly easy, should be solid in a week or two. But how do I get him to bugger off on command? Any advice will be greatfully recieved!
Cheers, B

Hi Ben, your baby PomPom sounds adorable and training sounds like it's going great. I'm new here too. Good Luck.

How are things progressing with PomPom...he looks like a lot of fun...has he learned to 'bugger off' yet? We have two Rainbow Loris visit our wattle trees each afternoon...love seeing them chattering away, just above my head, they are so friendly
