Hello guys, its the first time being on the forums here.
A baby Peewee seems to have fallen out of its nest today. I thought most of the young birds of this year had already sprouted their wings and started to fly. I'm even amazed this little guy is alive since we've been having heatwaves up here in NSW.
Anyway I found him on the grass and I could hear the parents where still around so I let him be.
However after an hour or so he was still curled up in the same spot on the ground, this time no parents.
I like to let nature take its course but I decided to have a little quick look at the baby. It was calling out for food towards me, its fairly healthy and looks like its just out of the nest, has all of its feathers mainly but a lot of little fluffy bits still, it cant fly or flutter so I'm assuming its parents either kicked it out or its fallen out with the wind.
Either way I decided to put it up in a tree see if the parents would come and feed it.
No such luck. The Parents are around but all they seem to do is sit up in the tree, I've seen them a few times on the ground but they dont seem to be feeding it, only walking up to it and away, but still remain protective of it. So I decided since its late afternoon almost night time I'd put the little guy in a cage. We get foxes bad around here, snakes and also I have a cat whom would probably mistake this little one as desert so with my best intentions I sat him in there.
Parents are still around and seem to recognize the young one is in the cage, they are also protecting it from other birds nearby.
What I'm curiouse is how to feed it. I've got some woobaroo insectivore and I know someone said to feed it with that and a bit of mince mixed up with some sloppy water. I was wondering should I use puppypal to do that rather then mince as I know Mince isn't good for too many birds.
I also would like to ask you guys about feet. I know thats weird but this little guy seems to lay down more then stand up, which I'm assuming is to do with being in the nest for a while but its clearly not ready to flutter any time soon, it dosn't seem to walk much either. I let it out of the cage a few times in hopes the parents wouldcome down and feed it. I'd go back inside and after an hour or so I'd come back down and nothing. I should also say I was watching from inside the house to make sure the parents would come down but nope not very much.
Since I'm more of a magpie person I wanted help with this little guy. I've raised and rescued a few magpies, we feed them a mixture of insectivore, wheat germ, puppypal, a boiled egg and farax baby rice all blended together for them, espically the young ones. Eitherway guys I highly appreciate the information you can give me in what to do with this little guy in his current state.
