Lost my best moggie recently and was a bit sad. Then it occurred to me that one compensation was that I might finally be able to feed the local birds which I often see coming around. I'm in Australia, and I have at least three Kookaburras which sit in the trees nearby, plus groups of Magpies and a Currawong or two.
I threw out some bread crusts, and they all appreciated it. But I know bread isn't the best food for them, and filling them up with it is bad practice. So I decided to get some Mealworms. A local place sells them. But at $12 for 100grams, and with hungry birds like these, it'll turn into a money pit before too long.
But I've read that you can breed mealworms from a handful of live worms, using a simple box. What I can't find, though, is the details of doing this. For example, is there any particular size box that's best, (ie, do they need a lot of space); and can you keep the box indoors, or would it stink after a while? Also, if outside, do you leave it in a warm spot, or a cool one?
Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.
