I some time do...Only the ones that I get myself I do anyways...I used to do it years ago..When I was right into breeding..But right now I am only doing it for a bit of cash..I dont work any more due to an illness..So I mainly just breed them and raise as pets.I just ringed a few yesterday for the first time in a very long time...Who knows one day I may get back into like I did a years ago...

I have just started using legbands this year hence my main reason for joining the ancs. I am very dissapointed in the quality of them as the white used for the printing comes off so easily and makes it virtually impossible to read. I got more just today in fact and spoke with Leanne regarding the paint coming off and she said there had been lots of complaints. She was going to find someone else to make next years. I keep records of all mine in Avimate program. It gives me hatch date and weights and parents and even enables a hatch certificate to be printed out if wanted. Don't know if I will ever use all that info once the bird is sold but you never know. Jo-Anne

Yes Frank I use them but Im lucky a mate of mine acrually makes them so there isnt any problems getting them. Further to keeping records what method do you use to keep them, have you got a special program you use or is it all hand written?

John i use a file that i made up with Microsoft Word and find it crucial to my breeding programs, i have used them for as long as i remember and actually i use 2 leg rings 1 on each foot which consist of a color coded ring which represents the family lines visually and the other is the club ring that josie mentioned. Just a little story on club ring about 5yrs ago i bred this particular hen and sold it to a lady not far from where i lived approx 15kms away. Not long after she brought it home the bird had escaped and was no longer to be seen.About 6mths later i got a call from the club leg ring steward who wanted some info regarding a leg ring number registered with me,after further discussions we had concluded thru my records that the bird was sold and was told that she appeared in northern Victoria approx 100kms away and was in fact the Tiel that had escaped and showed up in another breeders yard tired and unhealthy. After making the trip North i returned with the bird who in turn was fed a fatty diet and loving care and after returning to condition was then returned to it's rightful owner. The moral to the story is that some people are still honest and to Greg the breeder in Seymour if you happen to read this article thankyou for your integrity.Cheers Frank

That's amazing Frank and it certainly adds strength to the argument for leg rings. What method do you use to keep the records? do you have a specific program, do you comit them all to memory ;D or are your records all hand recorded.

I use 3 different Documents processed with Microsoft Word which i then manually fill out. One is a Breeding Register where details of every Pair i breed with is kept including all their Breeding Details. The second Document is the Leg Ring Register where i keep details of each particular bird it's status or if sold to whom and their Details and the the third Document is my Breeding Certificates which i hand out with every bird sold with all details included and Genetics Sex and Health guarantee. I probably should up date to a conventional program but find this works for me.

I don't ring any of the tiels - no point to me as I am not an ANCS member and they are so visually different its easy to tell them apart.
I have a access database that goes back 10 1992 and lists every bird and egg (except the quails I got sick of entering them!) that has come through my place. I can tell you where they came from, who the parents were, their offspring and mates, who I sold them to, their genetic background and what they died of. Its great when you can pull up a birds history and see that its only hatched 4 chicks out of 40 eggs or that one pair consistantly has 5 chicks and at what time of year each pair goes down and stops laying.
Records I find are invaluable!

Frank, the bands that are on Pluto one is metal, that is the G&M one. The other is plastic-looking, the tiels don't generally try to chew this one do they? Karen

I think banding may be a good idea for identity. I'm new to breeding birds..Between two pairs I have 10 babies and 5 more about to come out of there boxes. The cinamons are so identical to each other and there father plus two are exact same size as there father already. both pairs had two normal greys each, and now I'm not sure of which ones are from what nest

Thats the reason I band my birds Jill especially the red rumps babies. I have a Lutino and two opaline babies in the nest at the moment and once they feather up and fledge i wont be able to tell them from the ones I already have.

I have found them very usefull.....Tony www.javafinch.co.uk
