What do you think of the idea that tiels use their feet to eat/play..... I've heard that it isn't common for a tiel to use their feet..but more of a "big bird" thing..
Monty uses his feet to eat leaves and last night was sitting sooo cutely eating a sunflower seed with his foot..it was sooooo cute!!! he's often tried to use his foot but always ended up falling over or just generally being a clumsy little thing..
He also grabbed a feather he had molted and was picking it up with his foot and chewing it..sooo cute!!

Hi Kjjl, I have seen tiels using their feet but they are not as good at it as the bigger parrots. I had a male tiel that use to talk & sing to his foot all the time. He use to raise it up & it really did look like he was talking to it, use to crack me up laughing as he did it all the time. As they are not really use to using their feet for lifting up & grabbing food they are a bit clumsy. Cheers Anna

The majority of Tiels feed normaly using their beaks to pick at the food but very unusual to see a Tiel pick up a nut for eg with their feet to eat like a Cocky for eg Frank

Funny you should mention the 'foot' thing as it was only this morning I was watching my pet platinum hen holding a clawful of sprouts while she selectedly chewed away at the seed. No clumsiness at all....look just like the big cockatoos. I guess I noticed it because it was unusual to see. I have a few that seem to do this......I notice it more in the suspended aviaries. Maybe they have started doing it to help avoid losing their food through the mesh. I have to wonder if one bird started it and the others followed suit..ie..a learned behaviour. I did notice one doing it last year but now it seems there are quite a few that are rather skilful at it. Jo-Anne

well me personally think that bird are very smart as in the fact that they can adapt to there enviourment like jo-anna has said she has relised it ove time where her birds are using there feet to hold things so they wouldent fall threw the wire of the cage i think where the feet of bird goes it goes down to necessity as i have seen some ery comical things with birds using there feet regards bill
