I have 4 baby cockatiels which won't all fledge for another 2 weeks. The breeding box is getting really smelly, and I would like to replace it with a fresh one, but am concerned that if I disturb the nest the parents might go off the babies and not feed them. I am worried that the babies might get sick from the unclean conditions. Can anyone advise me what to do. Thanks.

Laraine, I have bred heaps of cockatiels and about every two weeks I take the nest box out put the babies in an ice cream container with a clean old towel in it and thoroughly clean the nest box out. I put new nest material in and put the babies back. All takes about 10-15 minutes. So far I have never had a problem with the parents going back and caring for the babies.I don't know about changing the whole nest box over but cleaning the original one out works for me!!!

Hi Laraine, Ollie's advise is very good about changing the nest material, but don't change the nesting box as I did this once when I first got into breeding & the parents did abandon the chicks & they died & I didn't know how to h/rear at the time. My breeding tiels just seem to know what nest box are theirs every year & always go back to the same one. This is my experience only. Cheers Anna
