Hi Patrick, I am not a breeder of lorrikeets, so the information I got was from a web site that I found interesting. Some people have said that they give them a few sunflower seeds, but otherwise I have been led to believe you should not feed them seeds as it can damage their tongues, which is used to suck out nectar only. Here is the web site which I was referring to which you might give you more info. Cheers Anna www.birdsnways.com/mowen/lories.htm

Hi Patrick, I give my lorikete a small amount of sunflower seed in a dish. What everyone has said about too much seed damaging the tongue is correct to a point however a little wont hurt as they soften before eating it. The big problem is that the tongue of the Lorrie is covered with small hairs that enables the nectar from the flowers to stick to the tongue and if the hairs are damaged then the birds cant get the nectar.

Hiya Patrick,
Seed does damage there tongues if used often but for a little difference and more a fun time i give my scaley lorikeet millet spray probably once every 3 weeks, she doesnt eat very much at all and ends up mainly on my carpet but gives her hours of fun play time and me hours of cleaning lol, like most have said ive heard alot of ppl giving them sunflower seeds too
Hope this helps

My lorikeets are in an aviary with Ringnecks and Crimson Rosellas so there is seed available and I see them in the seed bowl. I'm hoping the seeds won't hurt them. They get a good supply of fruit and I'm going to make up a recipe of wet food for them. They also get the dry mix as well.

There is nothing wrong with giving them sprouted seeds.I have never heared of them damaging there tongues on seed before.Sorry John but I have heard this before as you have said. I have worked at zoos that do feed seed to there lorrys..And worked for breeders that feed seed as well.I am not saying that you are wrong,But I would like some ground work on this one.It would be interesting on what is out there to say how the lorrys tongues where down..

My pet red-collar love to sneek into the tiels cage when they're all out and nibble on the seed. I'm sure it's more playing than eating, but he has a lot of fun
