Hey there, everyone!
It's been a long while since I last posted on the forums (although I am still reading regularly), but I just thought I'd let you know how Squee has been lately.
Since he's been on the home-made mixes he's been a lot happier, although still not quite as he used to be. The biggest troubles we've had with him have been when his cage needs to be cleaned - it usually results in a very sulky bird and scratches up and down my arms as tokens of his annoyance.
I've been spending a lot of time with him (against his wishes initially, I might add) trying to get him used to us being around him and his cage a lot, and a couple of days ago we had a breakthrough. :3 Usually I just sit and talk to him for an hour or so and he sometimes talks back, but on this particular day he was very chatty, so I started putting my hand in the cage just down the bottom to get him used to it. After about half an hour of sitting there feeling like an idiot he started playing with me, and five hours after I sat down with him to begin with he hopped out of the cage of his own volition. I, of course, was ecstatic and took the opportunity to clean his cage, so he's now the happy owner of a nice clean cage, and me without any scratches or bite marks to be seen! ;D
He hasn't ventured out onto me since then, although he's come out and sat on top of his cage a couple of times. He's also showing a renewed interest in his toys which have sat neglected for months, and is welcoming of any attention given to him instead of wanting it/us to go away.
Also, I've been considering getting him a friend since it was suggested to me, and have talked to my landlord about getting another bird. Unfortunately another lorikeet is out since he's worried they'll make too much noise together, but I've been given the go-ahead to get another cage and a budgie to help keep Squee company, so that will probably be happening soon.
I guess I just wanted to let you know that thing are looking up over here, and thank you all again for your advice. ^^ It's been a huge help and I'm so happy to have my happy bird back again.
