i found out rocko is a male he was dna sexed when the last owner bought him... hence why he cost so much i thought he was crazy paying $250 for a bird i seen on petlink for $100+...
ohh and does anyone else give their ringnecks those christmas nuts??? are they able to open them all because i gave him a smooth round small one i think it is a macadamian and he looks like he cant get a good hold of it to open it and keeps dropping it and i gave him this weird dark brown bumpy wedge shaped one and it looks like a rock!!! are the beaks strong enough to open all of them or should i hit them with a hammer first.... i would rather he did it...lol keeps him ammused for AGESSSSSS !!!

they find some of the harder ones a bit tough, but mine get into almonds and some of the softer ones okay, DNA sexing only cost about $25 to $30 max so he still paid a pretty high price, depends where he brought him from though, I sell handraised blues for $150 but the pet shop sells them for $440 (what a rip off!) but they seem to have no trouble selling them, blues have been the most popular this year, I've sold 14 of them and could have done with as many more, I think $150 is a fair price as they really have become more common up here than the lutinos there's been a lot of blue bred that have flooded the market a bit.

by the way the wedge shaped one sounds like a brazil nut and he wouldn't have a hope in hell of breaking that by himself, I hit em with a hammer first and they spend ages trying to get all the nut out of the cracked shell, Have you tried giving him pine cones? they love them. Also ripe pandanus pods (or seeds not sure what they call them) are very nutritious and great fun for them trying to break into, good for eclectus also as its a natural food for them.

I live in nth Queensland and pandanus is a native here, not sure where else it grows in Aus, alot of parks have it and its popular as a feature plant these days, some call it pineapple tree, if you did a google search you'd find a pic of it and you'd probebly recognise it straight away, often found in coastal areas, you'll find he'll love the pine cone they just turn it into mulch. I give mine gravillea and bottle blush branches and flowers also, they love them, and also eucolyptus nuts also.

often if you hit the brazil nuts just right in the middle they split in half the same with wallnuts, then they spent ages trying to scrap the nut out of the half cracked shell.

When you hit the macadamia nut if you hit it on the white dot on the end it will break cleanly and won't shatter everywhere. Good tip for humans too who like to eat them.!!! Mine love pinecones too and if you can get the green ones usually knocked off during storms or high winds they love them and they last for ever.

Hey everyone.. ive just found myself a baby blue that i will be getting in a couple of weeks and thought i would start looking at how to care and feed him/her... the info is great and i have a great shopping list of food for him when he gets here...but i had to laugh at the peanut butter on toast... last year a rainbow lorikeet landed in my parents backyard...lucky i had a cage i just brought so we caught him and boy was he tame...well one morning i went out the back to sit in the wonderful morning sun and drink my cuppa and eat my toast...well this lori went nuts and was sitting in the cage closest to me if he could squeeze any close he would of ended up with the cage indented in to him...so i offered him my toast and lost it...i also have a red collared lori who loves my coffee..if she is out and i have coffee she will come sit on the rim and no allow me to have a drink...i have to put the cup down and miss out on the cuppa im sure you will see me asking lost of question when i get my bird.. thanks everyone.

Hey I went shopping for my ringies this morning (toys , toys and more toys) and when I did I bought them a heap of dried pigs ears and rawhide chews, it reminded me that I had forgot to mention, they love them hours and hours of chewing for so little money is worth it. ;D
