Honest! I was only talking pics of the entrance when Dad, then Mum popped out so I quickly lifted the lid, snapped a shot then closed it - I didn't touch them! Mum - Orange Head, Dad - Red Head Mum Eggs! I am excited as I've never bred Finches before!

I have them in an aviary up the back in with a pair of Black Head Gouldians, 2 pairs of Red Rumps, 4 Red Rump fledglings and 3 Bourkes. This is the unadorned aviary - the Rosella's ate most of the Aloe Vera, there's hardly any left for the current occupants.

good luck with those eggs, hope they all hatch for you. although thats when the hard part beins, waiting to see the colours come through, feels like it takes forever. am green with envy though, my gouldians only laid two eggs and then threw one of the young out, wouldnt take it back either

did you try to handraise it?? I tried to handraise some wild finches that we accidently disturbed the nest. 1 survived for almost 2 weeks. I must have done something right......not sure where I went wrong though for it to die.

Well there is only 3 eggs now. Don't know what happened to the other 2, I had a quick poke around the nest but couldn't see anything. Ah well, if I even get 1 bub I'll be happy.

I had a quick peek in the box this afternoon and found a baby! It was so cute! I didn't bother the mum too much as I don't want it abandoned. No photo and I will not look again until next Saturday. My first finch baby!

I entered the aviary this afternoon to give the birds some egg food. I looked at the gouldian box and saw 50+ ants in and around the entrance, my heart sank as I knew what it meant. I removed the seed container (box is under seed feeder), opened the box and saw a dead baby at the entrance of the box. I flicked it out and looked at the mother who was still in the box. She scuttled back a little and I saw this: Obviously one of the eggs that disappeared was under the material and had hatched and died. This bub is the original one I saw. Here is a couple pics of dad relaxing: with his blackheaded friend:

Thats terrible Karen....I hate ants. Rotten things got a heap of canary chicks on me last year after they flew the nest a bit early and I was too late in discovering it. Really is so annoying and Gouldians can be a bit touch and go to breed as well from what I hear.
Hopefully your last one will make it for you.

Sad to hear. a dead baby will bring the ants, and they can stay and kill other babies in the nest......
Your finches are stunning though! I love gouldians
