After 2 weeks the eggs should have an opaque look about them and the embryo should be well under way.At this stage of development the heart beating should be highly visible good luck cheers Frank

Hi Karen i think you are under estimating your hen Zack I have had hens lay 2nd clutches whilst 1st clutch is only 2weeks old, eggs that have been tossed around and deposits all over them only to see them hatch into healthy normal babies with parents rearing both clutches!Dont under estimate them as you might be pleasantly surprised you only have to see the conditions they breed in the wild to be amazed as to what they put up with cheers Frank

Frank I have a hen that laid six eggs which she sat on for a week then she laid another six eggs and now she is sitting on them all. She sits there with her wings spread covering all the eggs, is this what you are talking about, I have never heard of this before.

No what i was talking about John was egg laying whilst young chicks from 1st clutch are still in the nest your hen has her biological clock all wrong and is best if you remove first six eggs if they are infertile and hoping you have marked them other wise she will have problems incubating anything that is fertile cheers Frank

I will remove all the infertile eggs Frank I started to candle them today and have found some that are infirtile. I marked them as i checked them so i know which ones i have done, what is the ideal number of eggs to leave her to incubate?

I think you're right Frank. Still too early to candle the eggs as yet but we are now up to 3 eggs and she is nearly dragging her under-carriage, so I think we might get another one tonight. ;D
I thinks Zacks' timing is a bit unique though. Remember her first clutch she had a spell between the 2nd eggs and the 3rd? Well she has done it again!! 3 days between eggs 2 and 3 this time.
I wasn't really underestimating her, I just wasn't expecting a second clutch as this is her first season. Ahh the surprises of breeding.

Hi Frank, Well we are now up to 5 eggs and she looks like another is on the way. One egg has been damaged though. Has a hole in it about the diameter of my little finger. Looks like it was pecked. I know some birds do this when they don't have enough calcium, but I double checked that and they have heaps of cuttle fish and mineral blocks.
Can you think of anything that might cause them to damage the egg? Or could there just have been something wrong with that egg? Only happened to one, the other 4 are fine.
Thanks Kazz

Have a look at the way they enter the box hens are usally carefull and enter politely but some males are buggers and jump in from the top damaging eggs and also have been known to break their necks with awkward landings this is 1 of the negatives of deep nestboxes for tiels but it doesn't outweigh the advantages cheers Frank p.s are any young in there with them?

Yep they still have two in the box with them. One should be fledging any day now.
They seem to be entering in the correct manner, ie climbing down the ladder.
Crazy birds, always keep us on our toes.

Naughty little buggers. Do you think this would class as sibling rivalry? I know which one it would be too. Just hope Zack lays another to replace it. Well fingers crossed, the eggs are so dirty it will be nearly impossible to candle the eggs.
thanks Kazz

No not at all Karen just accidental highly unlikely the egg will be replaced if she was to have 5 eggs then 5 it is don.t be to concerned about the dirty eggs and try to remove the poop on them as you will peel the shell with it cheers Frank

Thanks Frank, I was going to leave the eggs as is. Be a nice little surprise to see which ones hatch since I can't candle them and see inside properly. There is at least one that is fertile though.
Thanks Kazz
