Thank-you everyone. It's a hard decision I can see both sides, but still unsure. I can see the benefit of a complete diet but am somewhat sceptical of the contents of pellets. If you buy a reputable brand then there should be no real worries about content. My assessment of the quality of the 6 readily available pellets would be as followings Roudybush best by a long way then Kaytee then Hagen and Pretty Bird equal finally Vetafarm and Paswell equal All 6 are OK though, and I have used all of them. Currently I use Roudybush, Kaytee and Pretty Bird since some birds prefer one over the others, and with 16 pet birds all three brands have their fans. I haven't tried Dr Mac's food - if organic is a key word in your vocabulary (it isn't in mine) then it may be worth using but it is expensive - too expensive to my mind. cheers, Mike

I feed mine Roudybush and they love them. Just remember, birds in the wild eat green seeds- not dried seeds void of all nutrients. They also eat bark, insects, veggies, leaves, fruit...

Hi, great post I have learnt a lot already. I feed my parrots (Major Mitchells) almonds on a reasonably regular basis and have noticed that there is no mention in the previous posts about almonds, walnuts etc. I have recently acquired an Eclectus male who turns his nose up at these nuts. Is there a reason for this? Are almonds safe fro all parrots? Mainly I feed sprouted pigeon seed with safflower and sunflower seed added to the mix. I also feed the Passwell pellets. What about banana, are eclectus OK with this fruit? Cheers Sean

Hello, my ekkies eat everything just about ;D
They love pine nuts and almonds too. I think a lot has to do with how they were raised as babies and how much new food they were introduced too at a very young age. I have always fed Skye a large variety of fruit and veges (including banana from time to time, but that is not one of her fav fruits) and Gunny seems to just eat everything also.

i agree with vankarhi .... it all depends on what they were feed as a young bird and how long you wish to keep trying to feed the bird whatever you want it to eat if that makes sense .. My eckies arent fruit fans ... they will eat one or two things ... but if i make up a whole fruitsalad it gets wasted ... also the same with raw veggies because i dont do it often enough .. my birds think they are play toys So i cook for my eckies ... being companion pets and all ... and i suggest anyone who owns an eckie for a companion pet should cook veggies , grains and pasta for there eckies ... Pellets here and there are ok as well just depending on what floats ya boat ... not to many other wise you'll end up with an overload of vits and will end up bad for eckies ... also eckies shouldnt be on an ALL SEED DIET ... one last thing ... i asked my avian vet about almonds in the shell ... and he said you just have to be careful that your nuts in the shell are human grade other wise some nuts can have a fungi if they are old or not human grade .. which will be bad for the bird ... *Lisa*
