Ok I have just taken an obese budgie in through rescue. He is about 2yrs old.
Problem is what do I diet him on???
He simply cannot be allowed to continue to carry this weight.
He arrived with a lot of Trill products so I am guessing that is the seed brand he has been on.
Over the next few days I will be worming him and I want to change his diet over to a more suitable one.
Will finch mix have to high a fat content for him...I have finches, canaries, doves and princesses on this and they look great....though they are in aviaries and VERY fit birds.
Poor beggar is hand tamed (great nature)...but certainly lacks any form of fitness.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
PS Have already cleard most of the toys, branches, perches etc etc etc out of his cage so he has to move a bit more.

Are you sure he is obese seb or is he just a big bird? some of the English budgies are huge, any chance of a picture? I would suggest you feed him on budgie mix for a while and no extra feed such as veggies, although they wont make him fat, If he is fat, and I doubt it, it can only be his diet so give him plain old budgie mix, greens such as endive or spinich, not lettuce, corn on the cob and that's about it.
I would also suggest that finch mix will not be suitable for him and to be honest with you I don't really know how your Princess's are surviving on finch mix either, you might look at giving your Princess Parrots Budgie mix too and add a small amount of sunflower seed.
If you can post a picture of the budgie it might make things a little easier for me to help you out a bit more.

John my princess boy was raised on finch...along with heaps of vege and fruit so I have just kept him on that diet.
Anyway Rocky the budgie feels and looks rather rotound in the abdo area...I am going to worm him and see if that helps.
Yes he is a big big bird. .....(club rung) so that amends for some size.... but he is still rounder than he should be I think. He is also missing flight feathers though I don't think he is a runner. Will arrange some pics and take it from there...his diet is going to change on Tues (budgie) but a produce budgie rather than supermarket.
His cage is now also almost empty of paraphelia (spelling) so at leats he now has to move to get some food and water rather than just shuffle to the end of the perch.

Opps and the princesses also pick through the chooks scratch mix which has a variety of seeds in it including sunflower

I have never been a fan of supermarket budgie seed so I thunk you are making the right decision there and if your princess's are getting a bit more substantial seed mix from the chook's that will be fine keep up the veggies, they love them, have you tried them on a little boiled rice they love it.

If you want a low fat seed I think plain white french millet, it has a very low fat content. I read it was the best for budgies with fatty tumours to eat only wh/fr/millet. Excercise will be the best, put his food and water on the ground so he has to fly up and down to feed. In regard to princesses v.sunflower they do have a fairly high need for oil seeds in their diet so I'd buy them some grey stripe sunflower to add to the finch mix especially coming up to breeding season. I think the only problem with finch mix is the high panicum ( red & yellow) content which I don't think they'll be too fussed on. But your chooks probably are happy cleaning that up.

My princesses clear the dish of everything....I use to buy small parrot and mix it with some finch, not sure why I have stopped doing that though.
I have basicly kept Boris on what his breeder raised him on and put Zsa Zsa on the same diet....well tis a tad hard feeding 2 diff diets when they are housed together....DER lol

Ok guys. Rocky has now been wormed and quarantined in my kitchen for over a month...no not wormed for a month (der) LOL.
He is now looking for a new home BUT only to someone that will let him out DAILY and spend plenty of time with him.
Not sure if his flight feathers are going to grow in or not but as he has a full tail I can only hope he is not a runner.
His a sweetheart and beautiful to handle but I just haven't got the time to handle him enough and than I have the cats as well to contend with. His a green colour, not olive but not norm either.
I am only advertising him here as I really do want that someone special to give him their heart and home...otherwise I'll look at getting him a nice older woman (he is about 2yrs) and let him at least have a girlfriend and than put them in the aviary if his wings grow back.

No Rocky is still here...only posted it tonight about re-homing him. He is looking a lot fitter and slimmer too which is great.
Quite like the little fella which ain't bad really when I haven't been fond of budgies particularly since I grew into canaries, doves and princesses.
Like I said though if a home doesn't come up that is suitable than he will stay here and who knows I might have the flitter flatter of tiny budgie wings in the house.

Just an update on Rocky....today my aunt visited with her grandson Cory who likes to come and check out my hoard of animals every now and than...seems he loves the chicks too. Anyway Rocky decided to let his voice be heard from his cage upon the fridge thus causing Cory to look up and spot him. Anyway rocky has now gone off to spend the rest of the hols with Cory and will return once Cory goes home to his untrained lovebirds. He is already showing what a seasoned bird handler he is says my aunt after just today with Rocky. Will certainly be great for Rocky to get a bit more attention than I am able to offer him

I love to hear about children getting involved with animals, not just birds. I honestly believe that people who have some affinity with animals are usually nicer people..............I said usually.

Rocky is now very much ensconced with my aunt and her family.....seems my uncle and cousin (both big burly men) have taken it upon themselves to dote on Rocky and the darn budgie now gets so spoilt he is in desperate danger of forgetting he is a bird!!!
With pet expo on the w/e I hear Rocky will more than likely be getting a new you beaut cage....I can only imagine the sort of condo these men will get him LMAO!!!
