Hi all, Anyone wanna see what a B&G macaw looks like before they turn into the glorious creatures that they are? Not really the prettiest looking thing is it? Luckily for us that they do grow out of the 'rolled up chewing gum' stage.

When that photo was taken s/he was only a few days old. Her/His crop stopped a few times over the last two weeks but all that has been fixed. Infact, the chick now can't stop eating. Eats like there's no tomorrow. Eating just around 15mls every few hours. Argh, and it's only young.
haha, I'm already partially deaf thanks to my aratingas so the Aras aren't excessively worse. :-)

The chick looked healthy in the photo (and even more so now), but was deep red/pink when s/he emerged from the egg (needed assisting). It was severely dehydrated as a result of the lengthy hatching process. However, it is possibly one of the fittest and healthies chick I've had the privilege of dealing with. I am very happy with its growth rate. Very healthy and almost aggressive feeding responce. :-) Would take your finger off if it had the chance.

Here are more photos of the chick at feeding time. Don't think it's gonna win the miss universe contest.

The important thing is to remove the handrearing mix from the crop if it hasn't been absorbed. You just have to have more regular feedings of smaller doses of food rather than less frequently and more food.
I don't really know why its crop stopped. It has happened many times in the past especially the eckies. Most pull through without any problems whatsoever. Just needs a little more TLC during the rearing process that's all.

I find they will do this if they have not been hydrate properly or the mix was to thick...I just throught it mite have been interesting to hear why thats all..People would be very interested in this...for a lot out there would not know what to do...Nor how to empty a crop out..Your doing a great job there anyways...

Hi Motherhen,
Thanks for your nice words. :-) I have recently purchased a huge stock of animal grade (not human - due to excessively high potassium, or is that sodium, levels) hydrating drip solution to use with all my near borns.

I'm in Qld, any ideas where I could find one or what the rules are?
Thanks

i just adore chicks when they are that young, their sooo cute!!!. hi slognoth, because macaws are not a native there are no restrictions on owning one, and yes they are expensive fetching around $7000 each. i know Harry Howarth from QLD Birds and Aviaries breeds them, you can email him via their website.
