Hello everybody! Just discovered this forum today. I had budgies when I was a kid and a couple of beautiful but vicious Rosellas later on which I had to giveaway when I went overseas. I was suppose to take care of my partners cockatiel (a 'leftover' from his daughter) but it escaped and died (got killed by neighbors dog) within the first week I had it. I re-arranged to take all the bird stuff back to the pet shop but when I came home last night my partner already put a beautiful blue Indian Ringneck in the cage. I'm going to get this one a mate and hope we can breed them later on. They're hand raised and currently in a big cage but we have a huge avary outside which they will occupy once we made it bird-proof (the intended use of the avary was a sauna or spa or something ) I've got a dog to, 8 year old Hera, a Kelpie X and will be getting a Weimaraner puppy in March. I'm looking forward to read and learn lots via this forum and look forward reading! Cheers Mel

Thanks very much for welcoming us!
I bought another blue IRN last night and hope they will turn out to be a couple ;D. As I don't know their gender yet, I'm looking for a neutral name. Not sure yet. I left them in the cage yesterday to settle and got them out on their playground this morning. They're supposed to be hand-raised but gee, one of them bites really hard!
They look magnificent but I have to honestly say I'm not convinced an IRN was a good idea...I know they're pretty demanding birds and I hope I'm up to that. I know how to train a dog but a bird??? I will try to do my best and I think I have to read a lot on this forum here.
Pics follow this arvo. They took off when I turned the camera on...

Mel there has been a few threads on IRNs lately and especially one on IRN biting syndrome, have a look around and I'm sure they'll help

Hello again Mel.
IRN's can make good pets, but in my experience and from what I have read from others they can be nippy (especially the girls) but like most birds they quite often go through a teething stage too, but with patience they can grow out of that "teething" stage.
Robert our "Lord of the Links" has just posted a link about IRN's and their biting etc and their pet quality. Read it as I am sure you will find it very very helpful.
When it comes to handraising........there is handraising and then there "handraising". Some people handraise but the birds are not actually handled for long, they are crop fed then put back into a box. While other breeders will spoon feed and take the time with the birds to talk and pat and handle the birds.
Also your birds are in a new environment and new people so it is a big shock to them also. Be patient and let them adjust to their new "scary" (joking) surroundings. ;D Imagine how you would feel if you were suddenly taken out of your familiar surroundings never to be returned. It would take a while for you to adjust and adapt and realise that you are not going to be hurt or eaten ;D This is more than likely how your new birdies feel right now and biting is the only defence to say "go away I don't know you yet". ;D
During this time though I would advise to wear gardening gloves so the bites are not going to hurt much and then you wont be put off by the bird and the bird can realise "hey this human is not scared of me" and "hey I don't get any reaction from this human, this is boring, I just might stop biting now"............. hope I have made sense ;D ;D

Thanks for the tips - especially that one with the gardening gloves! I know they're scared but I thought if I can get them into a routine from day 1 they will soon know what's happening. I put them back in the cage after a couple of hours on their playground. First they flew off it all the time and I kept putting them back. Then they stayed but were just sitting on their perches. They're also very quiet (I know this will change soon). I will take them out again in the afternoon. But they seem to be healthy. They've eaten their seeds and a carrot. Trying to attach a pic of them. Hopefully have a better one in a few days... ;D Any suggestions for names??? img150.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bild001ih1.jpgNot sure how to attach pics properly...

OMG the blues are just so pretty. I am soooo going to have to get myself one ...... one day. I just may need to find someone who breeds/handraises the blue ones and dna's them too. They actually look different shades of blue too??? I would prefer a male ........ to try to avoid the nippyness but I just love the rings on them and can't wait for Takoda (alex) to get his. He is molting at the moment and I keep checking. LOL

Thanks again for welcoming us! petiel: You're asking me? I'm completly new to this! One seems to be more like a sky blue and the other one more a green-blue. Will try to take some more pics once they've settled and got used to the camera Maybe somebody can tell me what are theri correct colours are called??? grego: I don't know if they're boys yet, let's see in about 18 months... They're supposed to be 7-8 weeks old. Therefore I'm looking for a neutral name, so it doesn't matter what gender they are. Started to have a look through Robert's links. Thank you!

Well, good news: I just found out, DNA testing isn't as expensive as I thought and I'm going to do it once I can tell them apart a bit better. ;D I took them out of the cage this arvo to put them on their playground. This time they didn't flew off. Also interestingly, when I seperate them (take one out of the cage to put on playground) they start 'screaming'. One of them is quite easy to handle. Still a bit frightened but doesn't bite and looks very interested when I talk to it. The other one was once again like crazy biting me in all directions (this time I was wearing gloves ;D). I left them on their playground for about 3 hours and then put them back as I had to do a phone conference. I took the 'nicer' one in first and tried the 'step up' and he did!!! He was a bit wobbely and then flew on my shoulder and seemed to be quite content there I put him back in his cage (holding him in my hand as this is how I lost my cockatiel) and then went to the other one waering my gloves. She only tried to nip slightly once and was very calm. WOW, what an improvement in just one day!!! Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea after all to get an IRN...
