after lurking for he last couple of weeks I finally decided that it was time for to join, still have lots of reading to do though, so many great posts here with lots of info for a beginner like me.
About a year ago I buit a patio aviary so that my disabled daughter would be able to sit & enjoy the birds, started with budgies. the other half though fell in love with finches and I admit that so have I now. so the budgies all went to new homes and he pay packet was spent buying finches.
recently we moved to a new house with a larger yard which allowed me to build a new aviary, this one measures 8m x 4m and 2m high. it's split into 2 sections, the smaller section being for breeding cages and storage of food & nesting materials.
into the aviary we put 1 pr of gouldians, 1 pr of st helenas, 1pr of emblemas, 1 pr of charcoal zebras, 1pr of african firefinches and a trio of button quail. the normal zebras live in the old patio aviary, there was 2 pr of these in the beginning.
the gouldians have successfully raised 1 younster left the nest a month ago. the african firefinches have 2 young that are about a week from fledging. charcoal zebras are onto their second batch already, 1st lot was 3 (1m 2f) 2nd lot are about 2 weeks from leaving the nest. the emblemas and st helenas are sitting at present (fingers crossed).
the button quail now number 14, 5 hatched out a week ago.
the normal zebras are close to double figures as well.
we plan to add some owl finches and cordon blues (not sure on the spelling).
soon we are planning to give away the normal zebras and to get a pr of parrots for the patio aviary (no sure what sort yet), want something colourful and friendly so that our daughter can enjoy them.
looking forward to getting to know everyone here.
and yes I will post some pics soon
