Kebz, you don't want to go there. What some are doing is gathering the flight feathers of the poor bird and sticky taping them together so the bird can't fly. Not nice. I have only ever seen it done once up here & i might add i was not to happy & let them know as well. But then again what can you do when its not your bird.

I have voted before, but would like to add. When I acquired Precious his wings were then, clipped. This was an important time for Precious to learn and acquire appropiate boundaries.Since then His wing feathers have grown back, and he has learnt to fly. It is so obvious, that he enjoys flying. I would not want to take this, from him. from Robert and Precious

The guy that was doing it up here was a breeder. He used to advertise on Petlink. Thank goodness he isn't around anymore. I haven't seen anyone else doing it. I love to see the bubbies flying through the house.

Mango has grown back most of his wing feathers even though i only had him clipped about 2 months ago (and these were new feathers that had come through). I enjoy having him fly around the house, but im also worried he might escape accidentally. The only time he flies is when he wants to be on me or if something spooks him. He currently has 6 flight feathers on one side and 3 on the other, so im going to go take him to get 3 feathers clipped off the side that has 6... So he has some flight but cant get too far.

Found a little more on the taping. A certain Avian Vet has ceased clipping birds wings to impair flight. He will tape wings for a short term immobilisation & restriction of flight for a period of 2 weeks when the tape is to be removed so the bird can have his wings back to fly. So i guess under those circumstances there isn't really any harm as long as the right tape is used & the feathers don't get to damaged. Found that in my notes i have collected. Robyn.

Mine are all flighted and they are friendly for sure... not only the "Too's but the amazons and Greys.
They get a bit on my nerves at times as they will fly on my head, well at least the smaller birds will... will land where ever they find a free place to light.....The big guys fly to me and I have to catch them as they can be powerful in their landings.
My flight is attached to the house and right off the patio...
I didn't think having flight will cause them not to be friendly... it would be more the lack of human interaction and socialization that would cause the separation to friendliness and bonding.

It is not the "flight" that causes them not to be friendly. It is just with some birds they can develop attitude and some of us have found that clipping them can change their attitude......not necessarily so they can't fly, just enough to slow them down can be enough.

They do the same thing over here to give the bird an "attitude adjustment" ..
I've had a couple of Zons I've wanted to clip the wings but try to figure out the underlying cause of the unacceptable behaviour. With them it is usually a change in the daylight hours and raging hormones.

I've had a couple of Zons I've wanted to clip the wings but try to figure out the underlying cause of the unacceptable behaviour. With them it is usually a change in the daylight hours and raging hormones. I once saw a rolling pin hanging in a shop, and printed on it "ATTITUDE ADJUSTER" I had a chuckle to myself, and of course the thought was running through my mind.....................mmmmmmmmmmm, I could use one of those! My kids really didn't get the joke. All jokes aside though, I have some birds that just have to have their wings clipped. I don't hack them off, I just do it to slow them down a little. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and you should always do what you feel is right for you and your situation.

It is not always a case of being able to leave birds unclipped either. Sometimes it can be more a safety issue. Like with me when we had all 6 of our kids living at home. Most of them where obnoxious teenagers and would leave fans on, windows or doors open (screen too.....just walk through the door and not shut it) or be cooking and not put bird/s back into cage etc etc. I just found it easier to clip them. I have allowed Skye to have free flight but her attitude got really bad ....... once clipped she was good again (until hormones kicked in).
Snowy our little cockatiel was flighted until about 1 week ago as he would not sit on Caillean ....... he would see me and fly to me. So I decided to clip him......he can still fly and he can still fly to me but it is a lot more hard work and he tends to just sit with whoever has him on their shoulder now......so Caillean (our 7 year old bay) can now enjoy his bird sitting on his shoulder and I am hoping that the bond will be enough once the feathers grow back that we don't need to clip him again.

Yes I hear what your saying about the kids leaving doors and windows open, and fans going. We have had so many close calls its not funny. Happy that we have never lost one that way, but we clipped to save the heartache as well. Skye is allowed to be hormonal - look how she is performing for you. Miss Chuckles is still not hormonal, so far so good. She is a bit of a sook really. I have to clip Azizi's wing, otherwise he would fly straight at you and attack! At least this way we have the upper hand. He's fine whilst in his cage, but you let him out and he is like a rabid dog. I still love him though, we have a great relationship, I can scratch his head (only when he wants to) and we chat all the time. I'm so glad you did clip Snowy's wing, I think it is very unselfish of you to want him to be with Caillean. Most people would be lapping it up that the bird wants to be with them and not anyone else. You are a super mum Trace. Caillean must be happy too!

yeah well I have enough with Erik wanting to be with me ;D and whenever I go into the alex's aviary I have Takoda wanting to give me tongue kisses and Shrekie wanting to sit on my shoulder (even comes out of her nest now the eggs have hatched) and No name flying onto my head ;D
Snowy still see's me and carries on and tries to fly to me......but he is settling better for Caillean.
Oh and you say some of the nicest things Ellen ;D

I'm a little the same way when I get into the aviaries. I often feel like a bit of a bird magnet, they always seem to come to me. But then again, I'm the one that spends all the time in their cleaning, feeding and watering. They just want me for my goodies. Glad to hear Snowy is adjusting. I'm sure in time he will get used to the idea. I gave Jacky ( HR Cockatiel in the aviary ) one of the hens that my brother brought over from the coast and he still doesn't seem to be interested in the female race. He still grinds against the perch every morning. The poor little hen just sits there and watches him do it. I think I might have to separate them from all the other birds for a while so they can bond. Jacky just loves Curley (the Galah) and they are both males!
