I love hand rearing baby birds I would guess my total over 3 years would be at about 100 birds I have hand reared Most of them are Cockatiels but a few budgies have passed through and I raised our princess parrot, Elvis, from 2 weeks old I raise all the babies in the house and they get fed and take their first flights from/ on my bed! I have 10 baby Tiels here at the moment !

I too love handrearing. It is wonderful to be able to watch them grow and develop and the first time they fly over to you it is amazing. It is all their own free will and I wouldn't miss it for anything. It has it's down times and it is inevitable that you lose a few but I have saved many more than I have lost by taking them in when the parents just didn't foot the bill. Jo-Anne

I'm a newbie in the hand rearing department. Started in December with 1 baby budgie. The others all died during the night. Not sure what happened but there was a lot of panic in the aviary. The next morning the cock died and then we discovered only 1 baby alive. We pulled mum and baby out but she was struggling so I took on the role of mum. We shared feeding responsibilities. I always gave the first feed of the day.

i personally am not handrairing the cockatiels, however my sister is probably turnig off around 15 - 20 a month for the last couple of years, with a few spells in between.. and at the moment demand is higher than our supply.. but yeah most of our cockatiels are $35 and come with a little beginners kit for the beginners.. sure beats the $75 - $90 the petshops sell them for... cheers wayne

I have experience with lovebirds, budgies, Tiels and Bourkes but I prefer that my parents feed and I socialize. My own personal experience is that parent raised birds seem to make better pets. I'm not saying I don't enjoy handfeeding babies. My parent birds just do a much more efficient job. I handfeed when I have no fosters or if I have a baby that will die unless I do.

I have raised about 4 or 5 tiels (can't remember now - age is creeping up with me) and the alexandrine I have at the moment. I thought I was "experienced" because I had not lost a bird, but when I joined some forums about a year ago (the internet is wonderful sometimes) I started to read other peoples handraising stories and realised "I know very little" and have been lucky to not have problems. I worry about the little one I have at the moment only because I have read the problems that can occur. I am very careful and clean/sterilise everything, but I guess I am just a worrying mummy. He is fine though and is only on 2 feeds a day and pecking at other stuff I put in his cage.
Oh I tried to raise some wild finches but 2 died the next day and I survived for almost 2 weeks. They were naked when I got them and the little one that survived the longest was almost feathered - golden brown

That was supposed to say "1 survived for almost two weeks and was almost fully feathered - golden brown when it died".

I've handreared 3 baby magpies although I lost one today due, I think, to poxvirus. The first one made it to release stage but during his second night out he was attacked and we found him dead the next morning. I still have one at the mo, there's a pic of him on the photo forum.
Cheers, Jules

$200 for a handraised baby 'tiel Where are you from??? I have seen some just over $100 but ................ wow, $200. That could not be just for a normal.........could it. I only paid about $45 max, and only about $25 for a normal grey one, many years ago, but I still see them in pet shops for around $60 - $120 depending on colour.

I would like to know how and what you feed your finches when handraising. I tried to handraise some wild ones that we accidently disturbed the nest. The first two died the next day but the third one survived for almost 2 weeks
