I bought 4 show budgies a couple of months ago, and now one has an egg. Not the ideal time to breed, but here's hoping. ;D Its a lot darker in colour than the eggs my normal budgies lay. Is this the usual?

G'Day Laraine, Budgies will breed any time so don't worry too much, but i have to admit it's way too cold for breeding, I have three babies at the moment and i check them every day just to make sure they are OK I also have another hen sitting on 4 eggs and they look OK at the moment. The darkness of the egg shouldn't be a problem just keep an eye on things she should lay some more eggs, usually every second day.

I have two babies that I have bought inside they are at the stage where they are feeding themselves and are doing well. I also have four or five hens sitting on eggs at the moment. The problem is you just cant stop these little birds from breeding, if you take the nest boxes out they lay in the seed tray or on the floor of the aviary so i just let them regulate their breeding cycle.
I do take the in during the cold weather just in case and I have started to hand raise baby budgies with great success.

The 2 little jelly beans are now getting pin feathers. I'm quite excited as I haven't had show budgies before, and the guy I bought them off told me they sometimes were hard to breed. I'm also thinking about getting a couple of Texas Clearbody budgies if I can.

Budgies are very addictive Laraine and they can give you a lot of satisfaction, good luck with your babies and lots of success.
