I have fallen in love with the little parrots called 'Parrotlets'. Does anyone know where in Australia (preferably NSW) I can buy some? thanks

I've been searching and I think may need to dig a bit deeper with my contacts. They are in Australia according to the exotic bird register thingy, but I have no idea who's got them. They're adorable but I dread how much they would be.

Back in the late 1990's when all rarer exotic birds had to be registered with the federal Government under the National Exotic Bird Registration Scheme there was one Pacific Parrotlet registered and no other parrotlets. By the time the scheme was finished by the Governemtn in 2001 there were none registered, and presumably the single specimen had died. Although it is widely known that by no means all birds were actually declared by aviculurists to NEBRS, as far as the Government is concerned it was an accurate account of the birds present in 2001 in Australia. Parrotlets are rumoured to be present currently in Australia but as far as the Federal Government is concerned they would be considered (no doubt accurately) as having been smuggled and would attract a significant fine, if not gaol sentence, for their possession. It would certainly be impossible to register them under the EBAG scheme (see the EBAG thread under Squawk Talk). Sorry, you will have to look for another bird I'm afraid. It is a pity we don't have them here, I've seen them in USA aviaries and they are delightful little birds, although their temperament is rather like a Lovebird - they think they are a big bird trapped in a small body cheers, Mike

I thought there were parrotlets? I saw Ian Adcock had his name under parrotlets, unless that was a while ago...

If you meant in the Pet Directory there is no listing for parrotlets and Ian's advert doesn't mention parrotlets. Since they were not registered under NEBRS the Federal Government under their EBAG system regard any found in Australia as illegal, and at best they would be confiscated and go to a zoo, at worst they would be euthanized if they thought there was any disease risk. Quite apart from the hefty penalties for having them. cheers, Mike

I would like to see a photo si it possible? Hi Luisa Some photos can be seen at www.parrotlets.com/Species.html. Remember they are small parrots - no bigger than a small budgie or a canary. They might be small but the only ones I have handled (in the USA) had a mean bite for their size. cheers, Mike

If you're after something teeny and foreign there are lineolated parrots in Australia. I have no idea on price. IN 2001 there was 6 Lineolated parrots in Australia, all owned by the same breeder in NSW. I've no idea how many there are now - but I would expect the price to still be very high. cheers, Mike

Funny you should say that Mike. I had a wonderful chat on the phone to one of the linnie breeders yesterday before placing my post. They're not cheap (looking at high 4 figures for a pair) and there are only a few breeders in Australia. These are from NEBRAS stock. I did get a quote for a pair and may look at them down the track to add to my South American passion. At least the neighbours wouldn't be able to complain about noise from them. if you're after a bird that is small, exotic and quite uncommon here in Australia but still legal then linnies may be the way to go. They are legally here but because there aren't alot you will be paying big money. It's all basic economics of supply and demand.

I made enquiries about 2 years ago as I am completely enamoured with linnies & they were $3000 each then. Have to wait for that lotto win I'm afraid.

Price On Application - you have to ask to find out. I discovered a couple of days ago that a friend of mine has been quietly breeding Linneolateds very successfully. He doen't advertise since he can sell without problems to his contacts in the bird world. Looking at around $7000 for a breeding pair and up to $3000 for a young single bird. cheers, Mike
