I was also told ... they are pretty speedy breeders also ... soo it may not take long for them to get out in the world and for the priceeee to drop

Rach, after having a bit of a squiz I couldn't find anything regarding their availability in Australia, but there are people on this forum who are lot more connected with breeders than I am. If they are in the country, then it is very hush-hush. Apart from being tiny, they remind me of lovebirds...short & stocky.

Just bumping this thread. Does anybody know of any updated info on the status of Parrotlets in Australia? I made some comments about Parrotlets back at the start of this thread in 2008. The comments still stand - they would be illegal to own in Australia since they could not have come from legally imported birds, only from smuggled birds. And any birds that are bred from illegally smuggled birds are also considered to be illegal and liable to be seized and euthanized. Having said that I have never heard of any Parrotlets being here since those comments in 2008. On the other hand Lineolated Parrots have dropped drastically since 2008 - a current advert on Petlink has the following UNRELATED BONDED PAIR OF TURQUOISE LINNIES $1000.00PR SPARE COCKS -ONE TURQUOISE ONE GREEN $500.00EA They are obviously breeding well, and in good numbers. Getting to be affordable by mere mortals cheers, Mike

I am a bit confused Mike, how can they be Lineolated Parrots and turks at the same time? Cross species?

I am a bit confused Mike, how can they be Lineolated Parrots and turks at the same time? Cross species? It refers to their colour. Linnies come in a variety of colour mutations, turquoise being one of them. The colour variation is one reason they are popular. See www.linniesociety.org/colors.html for examples of the colour mutations. cheers, Mike

Cheers for that Mike, get it now They look very cute, a cross between a budgie and a love bird. So are you saying that at some point some one has smuggled them into the country or can you import these birds? Get a bit confused where the bird origins come from soemtimes.

I have also seen the ad on Petlink for them. They have certainly come down in price from the $3000 plus when I first heard about them a few years ago. They look cute.

So are you saying that at some point some one has smuggled them into the country or can you import these birds? Get a bit confused where the bird origins come from soemtimes. If we are talking about Lineolated parrots then they will almost certainly have been smuggled originally - although there was a period of several years in the very early 1990's when legal import of some parrot species was allowed. It is possible that Linnies came in then legally but I doubt it. Apart from that short period there has never been legally sanctioned import of parrots into Australia - never ever. In the 19th and first half of the 20th Century, parrots were imported regularly, but it was more a case of the practice being ignored rather than being sanctioned. It is interesting to look at early newspaper reports about keeping birds at that time. I wrote an article for my local club magazine on some of those reports - I might reproduce it as a new thread in Squawk Talk! cheers, Mike

I'm guessing the same would apply to the Macaws, Indian Ringnecks, etc. as mentioned in another thread from 1937.
