Probably canaries as well. I'm sure in the 30s they didn't really care what was imported into the country, hence the minor birds escaping in NSW and the sparrows in Melbourne (which by the way I think are the cutest little things around).

Yes Anzac, there are no shortage of sparrows here in Melbourne. In fact there's no shortage of them along the entire east coast of the country. The only place you don't find them is Western Australia and every time there has been an outbreak of sparrows in WA fauna authorities have been very quick to quell them. With regards to very small parrots, I actually think it is hard to go past our native Neophemas. I would think that they would only be marginally larger in size except for a longer tail. Some of the mutations of the Scarlet-Breasted Parrot and the Turks are just stunning. Very easy to breed too. Just attach a nest box to the side of the cage with a couple of occy straps and away they go.

House Sparrows were first released in Victoria in September 1863, as part of the attempt by the English gentry to anglify the Australian bush. Some 80 birds were released at that time, and many further releases took place in various parts of Victoria, South Australia and NSW in the succeeding few years. However very soon there were complaints about them eating fruit (1868 in Collins St Melbourne) and by the mid 1880's South Australia, in an attempt to eradicate them, was offering a bounty of sixpence a dozen for Sparrow heads, and two shillings and sixpence for 100 Sparrow eggs! cheers, Mike

I wonder what sparrows are like as pets? Coming from WA I like to see them all around Melbourne. Still lorries are regarded as pests over here and especially by me sometimes when they attack our fig tree. The little buggers just pick a hole in the fig, eat a little and then move onto the next one. You're lucky to eat one fig off the the tree before the lorries get to them

So the story goes they used to have shooters at the WA border to stop the sparrows coming across Don't tell Laraine (it was you wasn't it Laraine?) about the turks being easy to breed, I don't think she's having that much luck!
