ok friday......upset kids not coming for xmas....friday night partner says lets make yah feel better by getting that cockie yah wanted bub....awesome i replied. add reads 'cockatoo baby, tame, loves pats etc' we get there late at night man makes us wait outside his house *raises eyebrow to that* heres screaming from back, i say to my partner erm aint that meant to be tame and would be inside? partner says i dunno? ok waits a while out comes this beautiful bird, aww i say, yah sure hes tame? u call it a he r u sure? yup tame and yup male he says i look at the bird look at my partner he says hmmm could be just a lil scared....ok i say ill take yah word for it and take em...man reaches into cage GRABS its wing! then continues to pull the poor bird OUT of the cage like this untill he can reach the OTHER wing and grabs onto them both fully spread and dumps em inna tansport box and walks off....im thinking omg...get em home try taking em outta the box end up with a bruise bigger than a 50 cent piece on my arm and a bird who constantly hisses at me even when i am about 6 feet away i have spent the past two days just sitting next to his cage with a reallyyyyyyyy low voice just talking to him, i have got em (sometimes) coming up to the side of the cage and taking lil bits of food out of my hand and running away....WHAT am i meant to do? i think this man hasnt been very nice to this bird at all and the poor thing is scared shitless hes around 10 mths old (so the man says) he does look young but i dont know if i can do much with him hell my arm still hurts from friday night and the bruise is still black lol is he able to be tamed? how can i do that or am i better off finding him a loving home with someone else who knows how to deal with these birds? hes quite quiet most of the time, if u put yr hand over the top of the cage he screams and from about 6.30am - 10.30 am he screams alot then doesnt make a noise for the rest of the day any ideas anyone? G'Day Rach, well thats quite a story and when the bloke told you to wait out side his house, let alone hearing the screams from the back of the house I would have got back in my car and driven as fast as the law allowed me away form there.
However it seems that you are now the proud owner of a very scared and ill treated bird, what to do, well what you are doing is about right sitting with the little one and attempting to calm it and yes it can still be tamed but it's going to take a lot of time and patience on your part.
You could find it a caring home and start again thats up to you should you decide to keep him the best of luck it will be worth it in the end as it will bond the bird even closer to you.

My daughter in law took on an ill treated sulphur crested cockatoo and she did exactly what your doing. He is now so tame that my 8 year old grandson sits in his cage with him for hours and he cuddles up to him and makes no attempt to bite him or be nasty in any way. He is allowed out of the cage often and walks around the place quite happily. He is still not real sure of strangers but that's OK. At least the family can enjoy him and he is getting the best life any bird could want. His prior home was an old chook pen way down the back yard and if he made a noise all and sundry was thrown at him. If you have the time and patience I'm sure you will be rewarded. Good Luck!

Yup John very scared and ill treated bird im picking too, as for getting in the car and driving off....i dont think i would have even knowing straight off he wasnt tame just for the fact we got it away from that man tamed or not to be tamed at least he wont be hurt anymore and that for me is the biggest thing..... we have a avairy outside and worst comes to worst i will put him out there but i think im going to give it ago and have to handle a fair few bites from this ringnecks bitting where bad enough im not looking forward to the day this one really wants a go lol when would be the best time to tr and start handling him? or even attempting to put my hand in his cage? at the mo at night he seems to be i think trying to get our attention by making this lil quacking noise? and he sometimes raises his crest and bobs up and down making a lil noise also....again im not used to birds this size so am unsure on what to do with them and what there noises mean lol thanks heaps Rach

Poor bird, what a bad time it has had. A friend of mine's parents inherited a budgie from an old lady they knew. It turned out the old lady had died and the budgie had been left alone without food & water for days and days. It was terrified of everything, but they persevered and now it is a terrific pet. So persevere.

sorry its been so long for an update i dont have a pc atm so have to travel into town lmao well as u know that friday i got my cocky by sunday i had him eatting through the cage food i would give him...still hisses at anything i am starting to think its just a thing he does more than anything else lmfao so its been a couple of weeks now and i can now pat him!!!!!! he isnt clipped and since i got em HAS escaped once...that was a fun time catching him lol so now i am at the point where i cant really do much more training with em untill i can get his wings clipped and get him outta his cage and work some more....as we live on a farm and theres 100000000 a bloody cockys flying around outside he drives me nuts with his screaming out to them but for how far i have come with him in less than three weeks is more than worth it, hes not fused on my partner im picking as it is his last owner was male but we seem to be getting along great, i strated off just touching the tip of his head just above is nose and worked my way down and around and now i can touch any part of his body, he still makes his 'mock' biting me to stop me sometimes when he feels a lil scared but i can say hes actually apart from the very first day of getting him hasnt bitten me since even when attempting to pat him so im really pleased, as i say i just need to get his wings clipped and ill be racing i reckon ;D will keep yah all updated again soon and will try get some piccys!! Hi Rach, Just one word of advice make sure you get someone else to clip him or you may find you'll lose his trust and have to start again. Sounds like you will have a good bird there in a little while. The screaming at wild ones can be a problem but I have found with my corella that if I distract him with treats or a chat he soon forgets their going over. good luck and keep us posted

Well done Rach! It must feel so fullfilling knowing you are gaining ground and gaining a friend for life.
I'm a bit of a sucker for a hard luck case too, but I didn't persevere like you have. She would let you pat her when SHE felt like it, but would just as quick bite you. It was obvious that she had been VERY illtreated. I was prepared to spend the time and effort. When my neighbour was looking at my new galah, Rosie just clicked with her, love at first sight for both of them, so I let my friend keep her. She still feather plucks her chest, but at least she knows she's loved.

lmao ollie i was only JUST brave enough to try my luck with patting em i dont dare do any of my birds ...jacksprat although u didnt get to keep her what a wonderful story and least u can still see her next door, when i moved here i had to sell all my birds tame and bredding pair and not one person emailed me to let me know all was ok, altho a plus was the lady i sold my lutino ringnecks to where about to lay and a month or more ago i saw her selling lutino babies on trademe which is like ebay here and i know she only had my pair of yellows so am pretty sure those babies where from my birds and if i must say they were beautiful birds but anyway my partner is with the cfa here in kyneton, melb, and he knows a vet who will clip my babies wings for me for next to nothing ;D now i have to be brave enough to actually catch him to get him in there lmfao ive deciding to wait till after xmas my two boys arrive from nz on saturday for 5 weeks and think it best he just stays where he is while they r there, im sure we all know how 7 & 8 yr olds r lol Rach Rach

Poor birdy I am 100% sure he was caught in the wild and you were, therefore misguided Some people does it to get money no matter how the bird feels or the future owner. I few days a go I was admiring galah in one pet shop. I asked owher about babies and he told me there were no hand fed babies at the moment, only wild caught! I hope he will be fine and happy. So many cockatoos around probably remain him of his own flock....poor bird....God knows what he went through.

firstly let me say how sorry i am to hear that after all that hard work and love he passed away on you
secondly it sounds like he sold you a young wild bird they are normally caught in WA and sent else where for sale and people try to sell them as young tamed birds
my wife and i came across a guy in Sydney at a sale that was freighting them in and taming he was explaining that all you have to do is starve them of food and use the food to tame them up he was getting them for $30 each and selling them for up to $400 he informed me so i was sneaky and followed him home to find out where he lived then went home and called the RSPCA they found 12 starving white cocky and a number of other native Australian parrots that were also starving there was also some dead ones there needless to sat he got charged and fined and i thing a small jail sentence (he should have got worse)
