My mum was looking at getting another bird but she wants one that will possibly get along with a cockatiel. I have heard that princess parrots make great pets...is this true?
I have told her about them and read up on them and they sound pretty good and the breeder that is weaning my alex has some at the moment and thinks they make great pets and should be ok with cockatiels but to watch them at first.
It will possibly be housed with the tiel (massive cage for the tiel, only stays at the top). I know housing birds with other birds is generally a no no unless for breeding but this is a big enough cage and I was just wondering pet wise how they go and how they would go with tiels?
I'm not worried about the tiel getting hurt was just wondering if they could be housed together?

My understanding is yes just as long as the cage is big enough as the princess will be bigger than a tiel. In my other aviary ............. when it gets put into position and fixed a bit............I have decided to put princesses and tiels.
Princess parrots do make great pets and apparently can talk a bit too.

Yes, Princess Parrot are fine with Tiels as long as you have a big cage for them to share and remember the Princess parrot will need lot's of space for it's long tail to get around

Yes I have told her that. It was the cage i was going to get for my alex before I found the cat cage. Pretty big. Mum sent me a pic of the tiel in it lol, you can barely see him.

Princess's are wonderful parrots and are stunningly beautiful, I am probably biased but I think they are possibly the most pretty of all. Even parent raised prinnies are quiet and will quickly become very tame.
Just on the cage size will the princess be getting free flight time? It wouldn't be good for it to be unable to have some flight time if the cage is too small. I am sure you'll have no probs with the 'tiel.

It will be able to flap around in the cage but not fly, they have a closed off verandah area they will let them fly around in. Mostly the cage is left open anyway so they could come in and out, only closed when the dogs are inside but then they would usually be moved to the verandah.

I have put our 3 hand reared blues into the aviary with Teils. They were reared with Ring necks & Teils The only problem I have with them is that they eat the egg & biscuit mix I put on the floor for the Quail They land on your head & shoulder in the aviary & try to take my glasses off. They wait for us to go in & are hard to get off when you come out. They are very gentle & loving & I could thoroughly recommend them as pets

We have had several princess pets before, most of which shared cages with a cockatiel. The all get along really well. The one we have at the moment is by far the tamest bird I have ever had. He is a blue and is just beautiful. They make great tame birds!
Go for it!

Beautiful pics Greg! My male doesn't get to fly until the Red Rumps & Finches have finished breeding. He is keeping my handicapped female company. I was hoping they'd breed later this year but she still squeals everytime he goes near her - they've been together 2.5 months!

My daughter's pair were together a bit over 12 months before they bred. She used to belt the daylights out of him at first but after 2 days in a cramped cage she settled but would still "bare her teeth" if he moved towards her on the perch in the suspended. But this last breeding season they settled & had 2 clutches Guess it must have been migraines

Sad to say mum has decided not to get the princess after all. I found them great and one was in love with my Matches!! (Alexandrine). I think it's because our tiel is pretty old and doesnt much care for other birds so maybe when or if he dies (personally i think he will outlive humanity lol) she will rethink them. They were thinking of building an Aviary to get an Eclectus but they are re thinking that too lol. I think they will end up getting a GCC first....wish they got the princess though.

Don't be sad its good... for at least your mum is thinking for the Princess Parrot's to be, sake and not buying it because she feels she has to "where l have seen people do". Give her a pat on the back for deciding and don't forget to let us know when you decide what you are getting....

An eclectus?? I hope they are thinking of getting a male then if they want it as a pet?? The girls are beautiful but become very mmmmmmmm "hormonal" might be the right word. Like a woman on a very very bad day of PMS lol

Lol i told them if they get an ekkie to get a male, she likes the colours of the females and i told her to get a male or none at all lol. I know females can be nice but more than likely the males make better pets.
