Hi Everyone,
Since I requested this Subject I had better kick it off
( John, I went right past this new subject without noticeing it, a
tiny bit funny ;D )
Thats not the story though, This didn't happen to me but a
friend, It also relates to the posts in other parts of the forum on
the funny behaviour of Lovebirds, this was a Peachface.
My friend only kept a few pairs of peachies, mainly for the
kids as they grew up, they were well looked after and bred quite
freely. They wern't able to keep all they bred and gave the exess
birds to good homes.
Ocasionaly they handreared a peachie for friends and for
themselves,as peachies become very tame when handreared.
The Bird I'm talking about in this story (See, I got there
eventually) turned out to be quite a little character, I met her a
number of times and she was the tamest little creature you could hope to have.
Nature took its course and she reached maturity and being a hen, wanted to nest. She was out of her cage most of
the time and was free to roam the whole house, the site she
chose caused quite a few problems in the household however.
She chose to nest in the knife and fork draw in the kitch-
en, this didn,t seem a big problem, the would relocate her to a
more appropiate nesting site. Time and time again they tried a
different places, all over the house, but she was quite stubborn
about it and kept returning to the draw. ( you might ask why
didn,t the family just keep the draw fully shut, its because its an
old house and the draw didn't fully close)
All this did not cause any real problems untill she laid her
first egg, her character changed dramaticaly and this previously
placid creature became a demon, she would bite anyone who
had the temerity to want utensils at mealtimes.
The problem was quickly solved by buying one of those
plastic thingies you put in the draw, and keeping the utensils on the counter, you still had to be quick, if you went anywhere her
nest she would rush out like a fury and bite anyone who got too
close, This behaviour would continue for a couple of months till
she tired of sitting on unfertile eggs. No one had the nerve to try and remove her eggs!!.
This happened every year of the little birds life, but the
really funny thing was that as soon as she had given up nesting
She returned to her normal placid nature.
To me this story is a tribute to the owners of this Bird,
for putting up with all this out of love for their little pet.
Hope this story gave you a giggle.
Cheers....Tony
