Well I guess this would've been his first moult..so I hope all his feathers grow back normally then ?? This PBFD sounds quite scary actually...especially that it can take a while before any symptoms show up ( I read that somewhere as well) ... I eventually want to get a pair of ekkies but it's a big risk coz as you know they're not cheap birds and what if you spend all that cash on them and then way later down the track, they turn out to have PBFD !? It is scary stuff!! But anyway...cheers everyone for your input!! I'll go and check out all the pics of your babies!!!

I have a pair of ekkies. When I bought my girl 3 and half years ago I almost couldn't part with the money. It just seemed SUCH a lot of money......it really was difficult to hand over the money. Then I was so paranoid she would drop dead or get out or someone would steal her. But she is still here and a few months ago I bought her a "hubby" and now they have an egg ;D
I guess all you can do is do some research and just well armed with info before buying birds. Get them vet checked........that is probably all you can do. Oh and don't encourage the native birds. I do still enjoy watching the cockies and galahs.........but I do not encourage them.

Hey Tracey... I didn't know red tailed cockys were so much....I've seen some good prices on them on the PetLink ads...but that was some while ago now.... What did you mean about "if he has lots of green feathers" re your ekkie baby!!??

male ekkies are green and females are red and blue. So when their pin feathers come in as babies then you can sex them straight away. Boys being green and girls being red/blue. I would love a male as a pet as Skye was my baby........we took her everywhere with us and I mean everywhere and I clickertrained her 5 tricks. I even had some friends and family say that when they come back in their next life they want to come back as one of my pets. lol
But even with all that socialising and training..........Skye still became a typical female ekkie and has become a hormonal terror at times and has attacked me on 2 occassions and bitten me a few times. So she is now in an aviary with a handsome hubby and now has "2" eggs. ;D

Oh and most male ekkies have a very pleasant dispostion. Gunny (Skye's hubby) was handraised but never a pet. He has been an aviary bird but he is such a cool calm and collected boy.......even my hubby said that if we didn't have him in aviary he would tame down to such a lovely pet (this comes from a man who has never owned pets until we got back together (we were high school sweethearts.........and got back together 20 years later).
