Hi everyone, I am thinking of getting another fid. It's true what they say that once you start with birds, you cannot stop. There is a lovely 3yr old male sun conure in the bird pet shop that i buy all of my food and toys for my 2 fids i have now, and he is the most lovely little thing. He will let me scratch him and pet him through the bars of the cage, but he is $650 and i'm not sure whether to get him or a handraised baby. Any suggestions?

I know a breeder here who sells his handraised babies for $600. I would see if I could take that one out of the cage and see how it actually interacts with you........if you think he is going to be a great pet, then go for it. You might even be able to knock them down a bit in price too, it might be worth a try.................you don't know unless you ask. if he is already letting you scratch him then he is at least semi tame.

I agree with Tracey, see if you can handle and hold him first and try to get some background on him from the pet shop otherwise look for breeders or even check your newspaper classies, there's often handraised birds for sale in those.

Thanks for the help guys, i am going to go on thursday and see if they will let me get him out adn see how we get along. It says on his cage that he is tame, but how tame we will see. I would really like a sun conure and if i don't bond with him i will look in the paper and might even ask the breeder that i got ollie from if she knows anyone that breeds them as we still keep in touch.

If you like the conure and he is even semi tame and does not seem to bite you then I think he would be a good bird to work with........just my opinion , but you do need to get him out and see how he interacts with you first and maybe even the some of the staff too, just so you can see what he is like.........but remember the "real" him/her will not show straight away, but it would give you an indication of whether you could work with him.

Does this happen to be the Sun Conure at Lonsdale Bird and Fodder?? because he is adorable... If you want a Hand reared one I saw an add in the local Messenger for HR Sun Conures for $450!! Theres also a guy in Murry Bridge that breeds them. I *think* this is him www.petlink.com.au/Classifieds/sale/241657.html

I know, it is quite a bit cheaper than normal, makes you wonder why. Then again I have seen one or two for that price last year I'm still keeping my eye out for Suns as I'm hoping to get one eventually...amoung many others. Decisions decisions

Oh Guinevere, I think you had the "bird disease" of "addictionous birditous"...............ok I made that one up...........but it sounded good, I thought. I have seen some bird breeds varying in price dramatically between breeders and states. I paid $800 for my female ekkie, but I know a breeder who told me about $500 - $600, his alexandrines are dna'd and only $250 too that is where I got Rani from. I have seen them for as much as $500 in other states. I have seen ekkies as high as $1200 also and that is Red sided or Solomon island

guinevere the sun conure that i'm looking at is from S.A Bird company on main north road but i may go and see the one at lonsdale as well if i don't bond with the other boy. Tracey i got ollie who is an S.I eckie for $600 and was told when i first enquired about them that they cost from $800 - $100 (but that was if you got them from a pet shop). Prices really do vary alot depending where u get them from and u can normally get a good bird at a good price if you do your research. Although with ollie i was lucky. He was a good price and i got him from a fantastic breeder who i still keep in contact with. She loves to hear how her birds are going and i love telling her how ollie is progressing. ;D

Yes both the breeders of Rani and Skye get updates from time to time and they seem to enjoy it too.

I hope you havent gone down to Lonsdale already, because I just went after work and the Sun conure has been sold. Well I hope thats the case cos he was there for quite a while....But in his place are about 5 or 6 quakers...so I stood in the store watching them for a while I think my Bird disese is getting worse as I've gotten more symptoms, such as, thinking of something to buy from the pet store, just so I can go down and check out any new birds. I have even been looking at breeding pairs on the net, and I've just bought an even larger cage for my quaker, for outside Oh the Horror!!

You don't need to think of things to buy, just move in. LOL Everytime I go to the petshop where my lorikeets came from I am asked how they are going? I'll be on first name basis with the staff soon.

I am getting a sun conure, yay! It's not the boy that i originally wanted as he is 'set in his ways' and is not good with other birds or animals such a pity cause he is georgeous. But there was another sun there that i hadn't seen before, so i asked about him. He is a year old, definately male as has been DNA'd and is such a cutie. I got him out and we had cuddles and bonded. He is being sold because his owner got a full time job and didn't think that she could give him the attention that he needs. She used to work where i am getting him from, and the people there said that she will be very pleased that he is going to a nice home. (i am always in there buying things and food for my cockatiel and eckie, so they know me now and know that my fids are spoiled). I won't have him for a few weeks because i have got him on lay-by, but he is mine and i cannot wait to get him home. ;D ;D
