Ok guys........I have been thinking of this for a few days ...... ever since a recent thread on feeding our birds and "cooking" for our birds was a bit of a surprise for some of our "m e m b e r s" (I put spaces in so it stops the name of this place coming on automatically before).
Ok I am posting some pics of what I give my birds for food. I think sometimes a pic speaks a thousand words. This is not meant for critisising different people and what they feed their birds..........but basically as general information and to help others with some ideas with what to feed our birds.
Now you guys know I have a pair of eclectus (with a baby ;D ) and ekkies do need to eat much much more fruit and veges than most birds and they need food high in vitamin A and fruit and veges coloured shades of yellow, orange and red.
But what I feed my birds can be fed to other birds ....... all my birds get this food including my pet Alexandrine, Budgie and canaries, they just get smaller amounts.........but my ekkies it is 95% of their diet.........the other birds do get plenty of seed every day. My ekkies do get seed also.......just not as often as the "regular" birds (for want of a better word ;D )
Ok having said all that......I cook up a dried soup mix ..... like a minestrone mix or a general soup mix. I don't soak mine, I just cook them for a couple of hours and I generally add brown rice and oatmeal and sometimes other veges too. I quite often add red and brown lentils and maybe dried peas and dried chick peas.... it all depends on what I have in the house (and when I went shopping last ;D )
I freeze excess ....... to the cooked mix each day I add grated carrots, warmed frozen veges (especially peas, beans and corn). At the moment I like the Heinz brand of mixed veges. I was using the homebrand for a while.......but I don't like it. I also buy packets of corn kernals, frozen peas, and frozen beans and sometimes frozen broccili......just depends on money and what is available when I shop.
When the birds are not breeding or laying eggs I sometimes add cooked boiled eggs with shell still on ........ chopped up. At the moment I am cooking 2 eggs a day and chopping them up for the birds breakfast...........probably 5 days a week. (lucky I have chooks)
This week I have cooked up a bean mix as well which I have added to their breakfast. When I have silver beat I slice it up finely and add it to either their breaky or afternoon tea. I also add almonds sometimes.......but lately more often.
With the fruit.......it is whatever is in the house......but as I went shopping yesterday then there is plenty of fresh stuff for a couple of days so they got strawberries, rockmelon, pumpkin, apple, pear, sprouts.
I sometimes add cooked pasta to their dishes too.
I think that just about covers it.
Like I said this is to show people ....... especially newbies to the bird world, what variety you can give your birds. Remember mine might seem excessive.......but I do have eclectus and I do have brooding hens (my canary and alex females are sitting on eggs) and I do have a 12 day eclectus chick being raised by it's first time parents.
some breakfast dishes
this is the mix they got this morning before I added the sliced silver beat and almonds
afternoon tea
also remember it also depends on what is in season too. Summer my birds get mangoes, winter they get passionfruit. Sometimes I buy watermelon, kiwi fruit etc....it all just depends on what is available or how much money I can spend "this" week. Also my birds were not this well fed many years ago......it is only since I got Skye 4 years ago and I joined the internet circle ;D I have learned so much in that time.
