Ok so I have had Elmo for a few days now and things are working out well. But I just wanted to check if you think I am feeding him right.
So here is what he gets.
All Day Access (Put in Fresh at the start of each day)
Water
Small Parrot Mix
Egg and Biscut Mix
- The above is put in fresh each morning and if required replaced/refilled in the afternoon
PM Treats
Mixed Human grade nuts (minus peanuts) (Grr my sister has found these and keeps eating them!)
Sunflower seeds
Pumkin Seeds
Organic, sulfar free dried fruit
- Basically he comes out of his cage when I get home from work and gets a small bowl of these and has his treat as I have my afternoon tea. He also gets his own glass with some water in it to stop him from drinking mine. I read in one of the many books that this is a good idea to do this for the first two weeks to allow them to bond with you. Then when you start training he still gets the treats but only now he gets them in a training situation.
He also gets a small bowl of horse feed in the afternoon (I feed this to my breeding budgies) it's different seeds covered in minerals and vitiam powder it also has dried Corn and dried Beans which he loves to play with more then anything.
Dinner
Mixed Fruit and Veggies
- He only gets these at night as I don't like leaving them in the bowl during the day because in Summer his room will get warm in the mornings and I have had Budgie sick from off fruit so getting him into the routine that he can have a bowl of these for dinner. Also if it's not safe for a Budgie then he does not get it so mostly he gets, cooked sweet potato, fresh corn, silver beet, watermellon, banana, carrot, apple (no seeds), pear etc....
Is there anything else that I am missing. Some people say to feed grit others say no. he has access to cuttle fish which he loves.
Is there anything I have missed or should I be cutting down or adding more into his diet?
Oh also almost forgot when he comes out of his cage at night I try and give him access to fresh or near fresh gum leaves, I place them on the top of his cage for him to forrage and eat and general make a mess with.
Yeah so any advice would be great.
