Hello. I am an American citizen but my family and I are moving to Australia in 9 months time. I have a four year old eclectus male whom I want to bring with us but i wanted to know if Australia had any laws or limitations on bringing and eclectus(native to Australia) that is from the U.S. into the country?? I know that there is a quarantine and importation charge but we wanted to make sure that before we brought him that there were no other strings attached like needing a permit or what not. Any Ideas?

I'm sorry to say but i dont think you can bring any birds into australia and here in australia eclectus parrots have different licence laws depending on what state you plan to live in ...
NSW you dont need a licence ... QLD and i think VIC you do ...

I'm afraid you won't be able to bring your Eclectus into Australia from the USA. Australian quarantine laws do not permit the import of any birds by private individuals, whether that be an Australian native species or a species that is found elsewhere. Even zoos are not allowed to import birds from overseas.
There are plenty of Eclectus available in Australia so you will be able to replace your bird if you wish to after you arrive - as well as plenty of Australian species.
The Australian subspecies of Eclectus is not found in the USA so you will have one of the other 8 or 10 subspecies that occur in the islands to the north of Australia - possibly vosmaeri which seems to be the most common in the USA.
cheers,
Mike

Sorry to dispoint but you really won't be able too. Even from your quoted above links is this result:
" Biosecurity Australia has not developed import conditions for this animal and as such AQIS cannot facilitate your import "

The Australian subspecies will be far too expensive to buy. I looked into it a few years ago and was shocked at the price I was quoted (something like $20,000 for a pair....... I think it might have been more than that actually, but I almost fainted then didn't take much more notice lol). The more common ones here are the Red Sided and Solomon Islands. There are others but those seem to be the most common here.

ALright thank you everyone for your help and VERY useful information. It would have been bad if I waited until we left to find that out!! So I guess now I have time to find him a good home before we leave. All I know is that when we get to Astrailia I am deffinatly geting another eclectus!!They are the greatest companion birds I have ever had. How much is the normal price for a Solomon Island(that is the breed I have) over in Austrailia somewhere around Queensland?

You will probably pay anywhere from $750 up .. to $1000 from a breeder .... and you will need a licence to have one in Queensland .. which is probably around $35 a year or every 2 years .. not 100% sure how much ...

I paid about $65 for skye for 3 years or maybe 5 years. Do they send reminders? I know it isn't expensive. If you want a handraised baby, then in Qld the average price is $800 to $900 ..... maybe a bit less or a bit more depending on the breeder. My birds are redsided but I am sure the SI are the same price.

Yes,Clara,it is cruel. Australia has high standards about letting birds into the country. There is concern that diseases would make their way, here. From Robert and Precious

There are diseases of parrots elsewhere in the world that are not in Australia and for which there is a long incubation period and no accurate diagnostic test. If they got into the wild population which would have no resistance to the disease, then it could be a disaster.
The Queensland licence is for 5 years, and they don't send reminders Tracey! Cost for an Eclectus license is around $80 from memory currently.
The Red-sided (polychlorus) is the cheapest of the subspecies in Australia, at around $700. The other subspecies are significantly more - maybe around $1500 for a solomonensis.
cheers,
Mike

The red sided are around the $800 to $900 for a handraised baby Mike as I made enquiries just recently with a couple of breeders.....one here in Qld and one in NSW. I did know of a breeder in Bundaberg who sold his for about $600 a couple of years ago, but do not know what he is asking now. The SI I am not sure about but I do know someone who bought one a few years ago (after I bought Skye) and I am sure she paid what I paid for Skye and Gunny.
Parent raised can be around the $700 from what I was told about 4 weeks ago.

A bit of price gouging there - one was advertised at $475 in the Courier Mail today, and I was talking to a good breeder in the shop today that has reduced his price to $550 because of the oversupply that is starting to develop in polychlorus in SE Qld. cheers, Mike

What does price gouging mean?? I am actually serious not having a go.
tsukisama, you can join "land of vos" and they have an eclectus mailing list you can join. But that is a US based site, but there are some Aussies on that mailing list and they talk nothing but Ekkies.
