Hi everyone, I'm actually in the process of setting up for my first bird....an Eclectus to be precise I live in Perth W.A I have purchased about 4 books on these fellas just to make sure I was willing to put in the effort that's required with these guys......well I am! I purchased a cage today from Birdworld, it was slightly damaged, the top tray has a few small dents but I got an absolute bargain! It was only $325.......i had to get it. Here it is...Thanks Krystal

wow that is a good buy Krystal. When you buy a bird though make sure you get it from a reputable breeder. Start asking questions at the vets, pet shops and breeders etc before committing to buying a bird. I have heard some horror stories.

Thank-you everyone for your comments........it was a nice welcome. In regards to re-search on the birds, I have done heaps, spoken to many shops about them and bought plenty of books. I originally wanted one a few years ago but held off because at the time I thought it may be a 'phase' and a bird of their intellect does not deserve to be forgotten about or dis-regarded if you get bored of it.....which is why I have waited sooo long to get one. I will keep everyone posted as I get things in order

LOL, cheers guys.
I am taking your advice 'vankarhi' and have managed to get a contact number for a breeder, I will call him after Christmas so it doesn't have to be so rushed. I am not going to have one shipped over, I would be more than happy to wait for a good quality bird to come around.....I mean, I have waited this long already.

Welcome to the site Krystal. Good on you for researching! Beware like others have said about which breeder you go through. On another forum is an eckie owner who bought a bird off a lady who advertises in the Quokka (sp?) and his bird was very sick and if I remember right it actually died and the lady was extremely unpleasant and unhelpful to him. Think she was associated somwhow with a very big bird store in Perth that may have already been mentioned. I am not 100% though.

Karen.......my comment about checking breeders was actually referring to that "particular" incident.

Hi and welcome to big bird ownership. I only just started this in september. The only thing I can add to what the others have said is go spend time with the birds. Let the bird pick you as Elmo picked me. Don't take a bird from a breeder because it is the last one left or the only one available. As you said you have waited this long so I am sure you are not going to rush into anything. Congrats on your choice and can't wait to see the pictures.

Oh how pretty, I never knew the bioys had some red on them when they where young, I have only seen adult boys before. When you say he was unexpected what do you mean? I am sure that you know this but maybe put more perches in his cage some rope ones so that he can walk around the cage without hanging off the bars, Elmo hates to cage walk and I have heard others who have big birds say the same thing but others will know more then me.

wow he is lovely.........and he looks like a different colouration too. Males don't have that red on their chests. they are normally all green on the body and wings. It might moult out later......but he is lovely.
