I have 2 young Eastern Rosallas about 12 weeks old. One of them has a really red head and shoulders but the other one has red on the top of its head and green down the side and shoulders. I'd take a photo but it is very shy and hides when it sees me approaching. Is this colouring normal?

They all have the same basic colouring but you do get slight variations between the birds. It'd probably moult out the green - if it doesn't you might have a new mutation!

Its strange that the colouring is so different. Are the females different when young?

I haven't bred mine yet - too young. Plus my young female is cinnamon lutino. From what I have heard they are the same. The colouring could also be a parent is from a different region. Remember there are different sizes to crimson rosella's and the southern ones (bubs) come out the nest all green then moult into the crimson yet the northern ones (nsw & qld) come out with alot of colouring already present. I postulate that it is simply a variation in where the parents came from which may account for the colour difference in the chicks. I'll be curious when it moults to see if it retains the colouring.
