I finally got the Strawberry Finch that I have been searching for for about a year or more. I managed to get a pair & spare cock as I had a hen. ;D ;D ;D Now if I can just get them to breed I'll be happy I also have some Pictorellas & a Tri colour on order for later this year ;D ;D You can never have too many Finches I say

:DOh you must be over the moon. How nice for you, the little Strawbs will probably breed for you in no time at all. I love my Pictorellas, they are really a beautiful looking little finch. My favourite is the Parson and of course I have them. Mick and I love to feed our finches live food and we can sit for hours just watching them eat and play. They are a great way to waste time. Congrats again on your purchase. Where did you end up getting them from?

I got them from Graham Bull, south of Grafton, he was really great & allowed me to look at all his birds. I got excellent quality birds from him & after looking at his Pictorellas I am unsure what sex my 2 are. I had what I thought were 2 cock birds, but now I don't know. Mine may be a pair, I have 2 hens on order but now I may have to get another pair ;D ;D There will be photos as soon as I can get some, as Graham has kindly offered to sex them for me if I get photos. I love my Parsons as well, I have a chair which allows me to sit in the aviary for ages--- once I clean the pooh off ;D ;D

They have settled in very well with the birds in my communal aviary. I don't know if they will breed but I am over the moon that I have been able to get them. The cocks are brothers & the hen is unrelated so that should fit in well with my lone hen. They don't seem to upset any of the others at all. I am seriously considering building another aviary in my double garage as it may be too cold for them up here, & they will have to "rough it" I haven't been able to work exactly what food they like as they still aren't used to me sitting on my chair in there to watch, & they don't fly down to feed like the others.

They sound like they are settling in OK. You are lucky! "Too cold up here" ? Where exactly is that ? All our finches have the whole aviary to play in for the summer months, but when it starts getting cold they all have to go back into the three metre converted shed to keep warm. We have a heater in their for them. And any of the birds that I really am terrified of losing (like my pied cordons) I bring them into the house. My house almost becomes an aviary in winter. We sit and watch our finches every morning and every afternoon. Everytime we introduce new birds into the aviary they are always a little timid to come down and feed. Our diamonds took a long time to get used to us, and they are still the first to get startled if there is any movement outside the cage when they are eating their treats. I find it very relaxing sitting in front of the finch aviary - it is almost like a huge fishtank - very therapeutic.

I am south of Toowoomba & the cold south westerlies are killers What sort of heater do you use? I know it can get cold at Inverell too as my Mum & sister live there I agree they are like an aquarium to just sit in there & watch. I was out "sitting" yesterday & noticed that 2 Diamond doves have all white tail feathers which excited me a bit. I saw a bloke at Beaudesert bird sale in November who pied doves NICE ;D ;D If I don't get myself organised I think I'll have to resort to bringing them inside as well They keep trying to build nests now & I want to give them a spell but if I pull any nests down I'll have a heart attack

Especially the finches, they are such busy little things. I was so happy this morning, we sat for our usual morning cuppa out in front of the aviary and my three baby parsons finally came out of the nest. They are just so cute. Little skinny parsons, compared to their pudgy parents. Nice, white feathers ;D. If you didn't really sit and watch, you probably would never have noticed them. Pied doves are gorgeous. I love my pied Cordon's. In winter we move all the finches (except the ones I take inside) back into the three metre section, and we seal it off so it can heat. Then in the warmer months, we take the door off again and then they have the 5m section to fly around in as well. We use a ray lamp for heating. It's a constant heat, and not too hot to dry them out, and not to bright to keep them awake. They love it, they all huddle. I would love to take a photo, but it would startle them, and at night - that is not a good thing to do.
