hey people,
Today i found a Rainbow lorikeet on the ground unable to fly, fighting off a cat that was literally about to eat it. I quickly jump to its aid scaring the cat away. Anyway the bird is now at my house safe but the are some troubling things.
Firstly im wondering why it couldnt fly, It could only flutter low to the ground for a few meters but not properly fly. When i found it there were no other lorikeets in sight. It looks to be old enough to be able to fly, with adult feathers and all fight feathers in good condition.
when i brought it home it seemed a little sick, showing obvisous signs of poor health i.e. sitting on the cage floor puffed up. however with time and some food it perked up abit. its still not scared of me when i put my hands in the cage however it wont really step up or anything so im wonering if it is wild or an escaped pet.
Second, its poos are very watery with only bright red colouring. im guessing this is very bad..can anyone please help me?
thanks.

Well I can't say but I know that wild parrots and apparently lorikeets and cockatoo type birds are extremely high risk of PBFD (Beak and Feather disease). Lorikeets poos are normally runny......but the red might be a worry (I would assume blood). I would be taking it to the vet. They don't charge for wild animals treatment and they know of carers who take on these types of birds.
It is possible it is a tame bird that got out and maybe it has sustained an injury......but I really think a vet visit is needed.

well the bird is looking much better today. i think the red poo was only the watermelon it was eating.. cause its looking normal now.
im sure he was an escaped pet now because on closer inspection the are 2 flight feathers clipped on each wing.
im going to go to the vet today and see if hes ok and if the is somewhere he can go because i cant keep him. Unless there is someone who lives in sydney who wants him they can have him.

can you advertise him?? He is more than likely missing his human flock and they might be missing him too. I know up here "found ads" are free.
