As you may know, I found a cockatiel living in the paddocks at my place. It's a female whiteface - absolutely gorgeous! She was a bit scruffy when we caught her, but she's preened herself back to perfection! She appears to be very healthy, although a little thin, but I'm not surprised by that. Our paddocks were quite overgrown, so there was plenty of seeding grass which she was munching on, but that is hardly a complete diet! Then the poor little thing got herself inside my vege garden (it is totally enclosed with wire, to stop bigger birds eating my seedlings). I'd bought a new cage for AJ (which is gigantic! lol) and her old cage was going to be for Sonic (Courtney's quaker, which we are picking up on Sat) - but now the tiel is in the cage, and I had to buy ANOTHER cage for the quaker! LOL
We are putting word out to see if anyone is going to claim her, but I really don't like our chances. Its kind of the way people are here - which is sad. So I will take her for a check-up at the vet next week, sooner if I can.
She is VERY quiet. She pretty much just sits on her perch looking out the window. I go and sit next to her and talk to her, and she cocks her head at me, so I'm pretty happy with that. She's only been here for a couple of days. My girls have named her Blaze - because of the blazes of white on her wings. She's eating fairly well - I offer her sprouted seed, crumbles and dry seed, along with some greens - although she is eating more dry seed than anything. I sat with my hand in her cage today, and she didn't freak out about it. I THINK I heard a little chirp or two, but with all the other birds in the house, it's really hard to tell! LOL
So there we go. I'm surprised my hubby hasn't gotten more upset, really - he's not a real pet person, although I think he has a soft spot for tiels! He worked with them years ago in a pet store in the US. I guess he figures that they are my animals, and I take care of them, so he doesn't mind. LOL He's really a big softie at heart - just doesn't like to show it. ;D
If anyone has tips on hand taming an aviary bird, it would be most appreciated! I'm pretty sure what steps I need to take, and I am patient, but I do miss things! ;D
