Yesterday it was so dangerous, we were at a BIG BIRD place and there was a fantastic Crimson Winged Parrot that sent messages to my wife saying take me home!!!!! She asked to buy it but the sales person said that it was not suited to an indoor avairy set up and needed to be in an outside avairy, Thats OK what ever is best for the bird, but I was wondering does this apply to most Crimson parrots? Do they make good companions or are they really suited to being an avairy bird only, ideally we would like one that can be part of the family inside and put into a larger outside one with Bob at different times? Advise welcome

Hand raised crimson-wings can make excellent pets. We had a male, Ziggy for around 14 years, until he unfortunately flew into a ceiling fan in January and died from internal injuries (my stupid careless fault ). He was a great bird, very intelligent, and friendly although never a touchy bird. He did like to spend time on a shoulder though. Never talked, but we didn't try to teach him. Quite emotional at times, and got very upset if any new birds turned up in the house, although he would eventually accept them. As a species they can get stressed fairly easily, and when moving them to a new environment it should be done in as a stress-free way as possible. Give Vetafarm's Spark etc for a few days. We did have problems with plucking at times - usually in the spring so likely hormonal in cause. When he had a girl friend for a while he was in perfect feather Perhaps the bird you saw was not hand raised, or had been kept in an aviary for a while, in which case it wouldn't have been really suitable to become a pet bird. If you want one then look for a young hand raised bird - I guess next breeding season would likely be the first opportunity now. cheers, Mike Ziggy

Thanks for that info that is very helpful, sorry about Ziggy that's a real shame! Yes he did mention that it had always been an avairy bird and not hand raised I hope it was not a wild caught bird though I suspect not from this place!

We have an aviary bred Crimson Wing parrot in our house, he's the most beautiful bird, has gone from losing his mind if anyone in the house moved suddenly, to being not too fussed to have you within 30cms-ish, he steps away if he needs. Mind you that's taken us 5-ish years! I have a feeling that even if he was hand reared he still wouldn't be very affectionate, he likes his own space, if it gets too crowded in the top of the cage he'll take himself off to the bottom. And he definately likes his 'out' time, he sits at the door of the cage with his wings out pacing back an forth if you don't let him out quickly enough when you get home from work That bird amazes me daily, the other day he was coming to me to take fruit, walking past a bowl of the same fruit to get to me. Very brave boy. We think he lived in a small cage once before, if you leave a small cage(Budgie type) open while he's out he'll go and put himself in it! Such a clever thing too, you can't put him in his cage, but if you tell him to 'Go in your house', he'll fly over and march straight in!
