That sounds like very normal galah play! My AJ loves to roll oround, hang upside down etc etc. And yes, she does get loud when she is in that mood! lol It's a fantastic sign that she is playing with you like that. It means she is comfortable with you. Congrats! I try to ignore the nips when AJ is playing - sometimes she just gets a little too rough and nips a little too hard, but it's not because she is trying to hurt me. If she gets too hyper, I try to distract her with a toy or something that she can play with by herself. She loved attacking a pecan in the shell - she would get cranky with it and scream at it! lol Basically, ignore the behaviour you don't like, and praise the behaviour you do. Teaching tricks can help - you can start with step-up, shake, wave, turn around.....it's good fun for them, and helps you build respect. Just remember, though - THEY own US, not the other way around.

Wally, my boyfriends PnG does the exact same thing. He will hang upside move his wings over his head and begin yelling and hissing at his wings and then will stand up right again and pretend like nothing ever happened.
We joke that maybe he was dropped by as an egg, but we all know it's just him playing around.

First, I'd like to extend my warm congratulation! Surely you'll have an astounding bond of friendship.
If you have any doubts about the general overall health of your bird, take him to a veterinarian. It’s better to catch any health conditions in its early stages than before the problem becomes larger. If there turns out to be no problem, then you’ve gained some peace of mind in the process.
If you can’t get in to see your vet immediately, one of the steps you can take to help ease a potential health crisis is to place your bird in a warm draft-free environment. An ideal temperature is from 86 to 88 degrees - makes him feel like he’s in the tropics of South America. Also keep in mind that these birds can’t stand to be confined in small areas, so if you can find a larger room - an attic or shed - it would suit him just fine.
Hope that helps.

Hi Guys, Is there a really goos site/list for do/don't to feed your galah ? *I was going to try her on the fresh pumpkin seeds out of the pumpkin we had for dinner last night. *What about green beans - string bean *Rockmelon *Rock melon seeds *Honeydew
Also- any suggestions as far as shell grits or mineral sand ?
And - what do you know about the feather and beak disease that native birds get. Can galahs get it ? My galah is indoor, however we live on a farm and there a lots of wild birds. Should I worry about it with her as far as bringing in branches and gum nuts for her to destroy ?
Chat soon.........Jazzie

Galahs are prone to PBFD. The vet here that i take my birds to told me that the disease is rampant in the wild birds. We have literally hundreds of galahs in the wild here and some sulfers and corellas. So far none of my birds have caught it. My understanding they have to have close contact with the affected birds or their droppings or down feathers.
My aviaries have a total enclosed solid roof........hubby wanted to make them half wire on top and I said no because I didn't want the wild bird droppings getting into my aviaries.
Galahs and any bird for that fact can eat ALL of the above mentioned foods that you mentioned. About the only things you should not give your birds is chocolates, avocado's and alcohol. Mine get just about everything else.
You can give shell grit or mineral sand. I don't (or not very often anyway) but mine do get cuttlefish bones and a boiled egg in the shell cut in half with the shell still on from time to time (during breeding season a little more often)
Birds in general like bok choy, brocolli, pumpkin and the seeds (raw or cooked), carrots (grated, chopped, cooked or raw....raw being better), mashed potato/sweet potato (sweet potato can be raw or cooked), beans, peas, corn (mine also get this frozen ..... but warmed up as well as fresh from the garden), passionfruit .... sometimes I leave mine whole so the birds can have fun ripping into it. Rockmelon, watermelon, honeydew etc etc seeds and all (they seem to love seeds) pomegranites, apples (preferably with no seeds), pears, apricots (definetly no seeds) the list goes on and on. Grapes (they love the seeds in them)
Just make sure everything is washed thoroughly for sprays and such. I soak stuff I buy in a vege wash solution (it is called vege wash) and it can be bought from Coles apparently (but not in my town lol). Stuff I grow doesn't need soaking because I don't use sprays.
When getting branches from around the place just make sure there are no sprays on them. We have some big gum trees around our place and massive leopard tree that we use branches for perches and swings etc for our birds.....we know they have not been sprayed........but yes wild birds have sat in them too.

As Tracey said, they can eat pretty much anything - except chocolate, avocado, coffee and alcohol. Beware tho - they are cheeky birds and love the things that aren't good for them! AJ keeps trying to get my coffee - she is completely obsessed with it. LOL I also find AJ doesn't care for fruit all that much - give her dark green vegies, and she's a happy birdie! I don't give AJ grit or mineral sand. Cuttle bone and hard boiled egg with the shell on is really all she needs - and she doesn't get those all the time (she destroys the cuttle bone in no time! lol) I give all of my birds bottle brush, lilly pilly and gum branches on a regular basis. All from trees on my own property. I know that they aren't sprayed, and they aren't subject to pollution from cars etc. Since my trees are fairly small for the area, I don't get a lot of wild birds in them - they tend to forage on the ground here more than anything. We have much bigger trees in the area which are much more suitable for them, apparently.

Hi guys, I'm a new member and a new owner of a galah. Had her (?) for 13 days, happy, appears healthy etc....however...I have just noticed that she has scratched through her feathers and just broken the surface of her skin just above her tail feathers and under were her wings meet on her back. Can any one advise what I should do ? I'm told she was bought as a baby and the last owners had her for 2 months. Can any one help me estimate her age ? And sex? And at what age do they start to talk ? 100 question, I just love her and what to know more about her. Thanks Jazzie

Can anyone tell me why the skin around my boys eyes usually light pink but just lately the skin goes a really dark pink and becomes slightly raised Hi Jazzie, been a while since you have told us how your Galah is going! It sounds like your boy has reached maturity - that skin around the eye goes by the name of the periophthalmic ring, and the raised parts are called carunculations. The ring and the raised carunculations become deeper in colour and more raised with age - and especially when the spring hormones begin to flow - he has reached breeding age cheers, Mike
