Hi,
I'm Troy &, as this is my first post, I'm new to this site.
I haven't had birds for about 10 years now but I'm just completing a new aviary. It's located in the rear corner of my yard & is the shape of 1/4 circle (roughly). As with most yards, my fence lines are not parallel nor are they at right angles so this aviary has proved to be a bit of an engineering challenge but I'm getting there.
Basically, across the front of the aviary, it is 6 metres across; reaches back approximately 4.5 metres (I said it wasn't symetrical) & is about 2.6 metres high.
I'd like to put King Parrots in there but how many is the question? Will my aviary be large enough to put 2 pairs in there? Some people say Kingies are territorial (at breeding season) & others say they are fine. I definitely would NOT put any more than 2 pairs in there & I am also definitely NOT splitting the cage in half (yes, I know breeding pairs are best kept in a single aviary). My thoughts are to have a nest box either side of the aviary with a half divider down the centre (attached to the roof & reaching down 300mm) to keep each box out of the line of sight of the other (if that makes any sense). The divider would be in the sheltered area only thereby still providing the birds with ample flying room at the front of the aviary.
My experience has primarily been with Lorikeets (I have a pair of Red Collars on eggs now) but I have had Kingies many, (dare I say it?) many years ago (Sheeshk, I'm getting old).
If anyone has some definite answers for me, I'd be grateful. Like everything in life, I suspect there is a rule "with exceptions". I suspect the answer will be only 1 pair but that some people have had success housing multiple pairs.
Regards,
Troy.
