Well, we are getting a rainbow lorikeet - my youngest fell in love with them, so we are getting one for her birthday I will, of course, be the primary carer - goes with the territory of being a mum! But I don't mind Anastasia has already decided to call him/her Jixi. Heading out to see Karen at Emerald Aviaries and meet the babies! Rather exciting! Will be interesting to see how AJ reacts to a new addition......she'll always be my baby tho! Carls

OK - we now have a 9wk old rainbow. Such a darling! His(?) name is Bowie. I have to say, Emerald Aviaries are brilliant! Wonderful people and all of their birds are amazing.

Hope you have fun with your new bird Lorikeets are awesome birds, I got my first pair late last year and the first day I kept them I fell in love. My parents said they are a bugger to look after as they need special food but I have worked around that and now feed mine a wet mix only in the afternoon mixed with fruit puree as it is much cheaper then buying fruit each week for them. I also feed mine dry mix which is supplied to them 24/7.

What sort of fruit puree do you use Ebz? Curious to know, that's a good idea, especially with the prices of fruit and vegies now, which will of course get worse!! due to the floods etc....So any tips like that are great.

Thanks, not sure I have ever heard of that brand, but will take a look at Woolies. I haven't had little kids for years, so maybe it's not new...lol. I will check it out, thanks again!

Thanks guys! We are all very smitten with the new addition. AJ isn't bothered with him, either, which is awesome! She knows she's my baby girl. Bowie loves Anastasia already. I'll have to look for that baby food, too! I make sure dry mix is available all the time, and give the wet in the afternoon. Karen and Gary actually used apple sauce in the wet mix sometimes - I might try Bowie on some different flavours. He LOVES grapes! And corn! You're right with the prices of fresh fruit and veg - it's a bit of a killer! Even here in Coffs, where we have a lot of local produce. Although, to be fair, I haven't been to the organics shop I used to go to since they changed management. I might check them out - they used to have primarily locally grown. Do you guys ever offer sprouted seeds? I thought I would give Bowie just a few to see if he liked them as a treat, and he loves them! So I'll only give them to him once or twice a week. Such a good little boy he is!

I tip for a special treat for your lorikeet too when a bit older - ant eggs. They absolutely go nuts over them. First time my girl ever saw them she instantly knew they were delicious treats and pounced and ate them with gusto. Just try avoid the soldier ants as they bite hard when you are ant nest raiding!

I haven't met an ant that doesn't hurt like all get out here. I know Karen - you can raid ant nests and sell the eggs to those of us with lorikeets! LOL

LOL have to be quick, soon as they are being raided the ants quickly disappear with the eggs so speed is a must.
